About

Crash Bandicoot: Warped is a PlayStation platform game released in 1998, developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It is the third main Crash Bandicoot adventure, following Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back. In Europe it was titled Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped, while the Japanese release used its own localized title. The story begins after Cortex’s orbital base falls back to Earth and frees Uka Uka, the threatening twin of Crash’s guardian mask, Aku Aku. With Doctor Neo Cortex and the time-obsessed Doctor Nefarious Tropy, Uka Uka plans to claim powerful Crystals across history.

Crash and his sister Coco use the villains’ Time-Twisting Machine to reach those eras first. The machine functions as the central hub, with portals opening into themed stages and new areas becoming available as progress is made. The main objective is to collect the 25 Crystals and overcome the bosses that stand between the Bandicoots and Cortex’s scheme. That clear structure keeps the game moving forward while leaving room to revisit completed stages for extra goals.

Most of Crash Bandicoot: Warped is built around direct, precise platforming. Crash can run, jump, spin enemies away, slide beneath hazards, and use his body slam to break particular crates or reach different routes. Boss victories add abilities, including a double jump, faster movement, a more powerful body slam, and the fruit-launching bazooka. Coco is playable in selected stages, giving the game a second Bandicoot character without changing its single-player focus.

Crates are central to both survival and completion. Wumpa Fruit helps award extra lives, checkpoint crates mark a return point after a mistake, and TNT and Nitro crates turn route planning into a risk-reward exercise. Breaking every ordinary crate in a stage can earn a Gem, while colored Gems can unlock additional paths. The game also includes bonus areas that invite players to clear every crate there; failure in these optional sections does not cost a life, encouraging repeat attempts.

After a Crystal has been collected, a stage can be replayed as a Time Trial. Activating the stopwatch at the start sends Crash racing through the course, with numbered crates that temporarily stop the clock. Fast finishes earn Sapphire, Gold, or Platinum Relics. Relics lead to further stages in the Secret Warp Room, making mastery of familiar routes a substantial part of the game rather than an afterthought. Crystals, Gems, and Relics therefore support different styles of play, from simply reaching each level’s end to pursuing full completion.

The time-travel premise lets Warped move well beyond the island settings of the first two games. Its worlds include prehistoric landscapes, medieval routes, Egyptian tombs, Arabian scenes, a Great Wall setting, and a 1950s-style desert highway. Alongside traditional running and jumping, particular levels put Crash or Coco into distinct situations: riding a young Tyrannosaurus, racing a motorcycle, piloting a plane, using a jet ski, or navigating underwater. These variations are framed as individual level types within the larger platforming campaign.

Warped introduced characters including Dr. N. Tropy and Dingodile, while returning foes such as Tiny Tiger and Dr. N. Gin appear as obstacles in the journey through time. Its soundtrack was created through Mutato Muzika, with Mark Mothersbaugh producing and Josh Mancell composing the music; the cast includes Clancy Brown as Cortex and Uka Uka and Mel Winkler as Aku Aku. The original PlayStation release was later included in the 2017 Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, which recreated the first three Crash games for newer hardware. As the original trilogy’s final PlayStation platforming installment, Crash Bandicoot: Warped remains a concentrated showcase for the series’ crate-smashing challenges, branching completion targets, and cartoon adventure style.
