About
Dino Crisis is Capcom's 1999 PlayStation survival-horror game, directed and produced by Shinji Mikami. It follows special-operations agent Regina, who is sent with teammates Gail, Rick, and Cooper to Ibis Island after reports that scientist Dr. Edward Kirk is alive and continuing his work there.
The mission turns into a fight for survival when the group's research facility is found overrun by dinosaurs. Regina explores laboratories, offices, corridors, and other enclosed areas while uncovering the consequences of Kirk's secret Third Energy project and searching for a route off the island.
Although it shares a structure with Capcom's early Resident Evil games, Dino Crisis uses a real-time 3D engine rather than pre-rendered backgrounds. Its environments, lighting, character models, and camera work were designed around a tense, enclosed setting where danger can arrive quickly.
The game combines exploration, puzzle solving, and limited-resource combat. Regina collects weapons, ammunition, medical supplies, key items, and D.D.K. discs used to open secured doors, while maps, save locations, and storage boxes help manage the route through the complex.
Velociraptors are the primary threat, and encounters emphasize their speed and aggressive behavior. Players can move while aiming, use automatic targeting, mix certain items, and respond to close-call danger sequences, giving the action a more immediate pace than the game's deliberate exploration suggests.
Choices during the story affect which scenes and outcomes are seen, leading to multiple endings. Completing the game can also unlock extras, including additional weapons, costumes, and the timed Wipe Out mode.
Dino Crisis became a major commercial success for Capcom, with the PlayStation version selling more than 2.4 million copies worldwide. It later received Dreamcast and Windows versions, while its success led to the PlayStation sequel Dino Crisis 2 and further entries in the series.
