About
The 3rd Birthday for PSP is a cinematic action RPG and third-person shooter starring Aya Brea, released by Square Enix in Japan in December 2010 and in North America in March 2011. Developed with HexaDrive for the PlayStation Portable, it brings the heroine of the earlier Parasite Eve games into a new crisis while presenting its own title and structure. The story opens in a devastated New York: mysterious structures and their hostile offspring, known as the Twisted, have turned Manhattan into a disaster zone. Aya is working with the Counter Twisted Investigation, or CTI, but her lost memories and unusual connection to the catastrophe make her central to the mission as well as its most important weapon.
The campaign is organized as a sequence of operations. Aya enters past battlefields through the CTI's Overdive system, attempting to alter the outcomes of encounters that helped the Twisted spread. Between missions, the CTI headquarters serves as a hub for briefings, story material, weapon work, and preparation. This episodic setup keeps the portable game focused on distinct combat scenarios while allowing the larger mystery around Aya, the Twisted, and the ruined city to unfold across missions. The winter setting, military response, and science-fiction premise give the action a darker, disaster-story atmosphere rather than treating the game as a conventional military shooter.
Combat combines firearms with RPG-style growth. Aya can carry and use weapon types such as handguns, assault rifles, and shotguns, drawing on lock-on aiming to concentrate fire on the threatening creatures around her. Medical items and grenades can be collected during operations, while experience gained in battle improves Aya's capabilities. Weapons also develop through use, and the game awards Bounty Points for mission performance; those points can be spent at headquarters on weapon customization and protective-gear repairs. Safe areas within missions provide places to save, and end-of-mission evaluations encourage players to improve their efficiency and survival.
Its defining mechanic is Overdive. Aya does not merely fight alongside the CTI soldiers positioned around each battlefield: she can transfer into one of their bodies, inheriting that soldier's location, health, and equipped weapon. The ability makes squad placement and movement part of the player’s tactics. It can rescue Aya from a failing position, quickly move the action across the arena, or put a more suitable weapon where it is needed. Allied troops can also receive basic orders to attack, support, or seek cover. Sustained attacks create opportunities for a more aggressive Overdive strike against enemies, while a filled energy gauge lets Aya enter the faster Liberation mode for a brief burst of mobility.
Customization extends beyond guns. Over Energy clips found during missions or gained through combat can be arranged in a grid to alter Aya's statistics and grant abilities, giving players another way to shape their approach to difficult operations. The game remains a single-player PSP experience, built around managing Aya's changing combat body and the soldiers available in each encounter rather than a separate multiplayer mode. Its controls and encounter design therefore emphasize target selection, cover, repositioning, and knowing when to abandon one host before the battle is lost.
The 3rd Birthday occupies an unusual place in Aya Brea's history. Square Enix first announced the project for mobile phones before redirecting it to PSP, where the team could pursue a more elaborate presentation. The finished game was marketed in Japan as a cinematic action RPG and released on one UMD for one player; the North American release followed in 2011. Character design is credited to Tetsuya Nomura, and its score brought together Yoko Shimomura, Mitsuto Suzuki, and Tsuyoshi Sekito. For PSP players looking for an action-focused Aya Brea adventure, The 3rd Birthday pairs a catastrophic New York storyline with a body-switching combat idea that remains distinctive within Square Enix's handheld catalogue.
