About
Manhunt 2 for PSP is a 2007 stealth-action horror game published by Rockstar Games and developed for Sony's PlayStation Portable by Rockstar Leeds. It is the second entry in the Manhunt series, following the 2003 original with a new protagonist and a separate story. The adventure begins at the Dixmor Asylum for the Criminally Insane, where a storm-triggered power failure gives patient Daniel Lamb an opportunity to escape. Suffering from severe memory loss, Daniel follows the dangerous Leo Kasper while trying to recover the truth about his life and the shadowy forces pursuing him.
The PSP game is built around tense third-person stealth. Daniel normally survives by observing patrol routes, staying out of sight, and moving through darkened spaces rather than confronting every enemy head-on. Its radar and enemy-alert system help communicate nearby threats, while noise can expose a position or be used to distract a guard. Players can pick up improvised items and weapons, but the central challenge is deciding when to wait, hide, create an opening, or make a fast escape. Later missions introduce firearms and cover-based confrontations, giving the campaign a more direct action dimension without removing its emphasis on caution.
A distinctive part of Manhunt 2 is its execution mechanic. Approaching an unaware opponent from behind lets the player choose between quick and progressively more prolonged takedown levels, identified by a changing on-screen indicator. The game also includes environmental opportunities and attacks from elevated positions. Stealth is not simply a matter of standing in a shadow: when an opponent investigates a dark area, Daniel may need to complete a brief timing challenge to remain concealed. Climbing, crawling, and the ability to disable lights expand the routes through its confined, threatening locations.
Daniel is the primary playable character, although Leo takes the lead in selected scenes. Their journey moves beyond the asylum through a grim fictional city as Daniel searches for explanations for his past and encounters agents connected to the mysterious Project. The narrative leans on uncertainty over Daniel's memories and his relationship with Leo, so the campaign combines pursuit, investigation, and survival-horror atmosphere. It is a single-player game structured as a sequence of missions rather than an open-world experience, with progress tied to completing each hazardous area and advancing the story.
The PSP edition arrived alongside PlayStation 2 and Wii versions in North America in October 2007, with the European release following later. Rockstar London handled the PlayStation 2 edition, Rockstar Toronto created the Wii adaptation, and Rockstar Leeds tailored this version for the handheld. The PSP and PlayStation 2 releases share a samurai sword that is not included in the Wii version, while the Wii release has its own motion-control approach and some exclusive content. Console editions were revised during a high-profile classification dispute, an important part of the game's release history.
For players exploring the Rockstar catalogue on PSP, Manhunt 2 stands apart from the publisher's better-known crime games through its linear levels, concealment-driven design, and psychological-horror framing. It preserves the first Manhunt's focus on stalking hostile characters and choosing a route through dangerous environments, yet adds movement options, more reactive hiding, and expanded combat possibilities. Its portable format makes it one of Rockstar Leeds' darker handheld projects, and its troubled path to release remains closely associated with debates over violent-game classification in the late 2000s.
