About
Kanon for PSP is a Japanese visual novel from Key, published in Japan by Prototype on February 15, 2007. This portable edition brings Key’s debut work to Sony’s handheld as an all-ages romance adventure, returning players to a snowbound town where high-school student Yuichi Aizawa has moved in with relatives after seven years away. His recollections of the place are incomplete, and the quiet winter routine gradually gives way to old promises, unfamiliar encounters, and events that suggest the town holds more than ordinary memories.
Rather than asking players to master action stages or combat systems, Kanon PSP is built around reading dialogue, following narration, and choosing Yuichi’s responses at decision points. The opening establishes a shared storyline, but choices lead the narrative toward separate routes and endings centered on five heroines. Completing the whole game means revisiting earlier scenes and making different decisions, so its progression comes from uncovering alternate character perspectives and seeing how individual relationships change the course of the story.
Yuichi’s new home places him with his cousin Nayuki Minase and her mother, Akiko. As he settles into school and the surrounding shopping district, he meets Ayu Tsukimiya, an energetic girl he repeatedly encounters around town; Makoto Sawatari, who has lost her memory yet insists she has a grievance against him; Shiori Misaka, a younger student affected by a long illness; and Mai Kawasumi, an older student connected with strange nighttime activity at the school. Each route gives one of these characters a greater focus while Yuichi pieces together connections between his present and childhood visits.
The PSP version reflects Kanon’s history as a 1999 Windows title while tailoring the experience to a handheld release. Its mature material is absent, matching the edition’s CERO B rating in Japan. Prototype describes the game as a choice-driven romance adventure with a common prologue that branches early toward five heroine-specific endings. The UMD release is single-player, and Prototype later made the same PSP version available digitally through the Japanese PlayStation Store in 2009.
Presentation is a notable part of this PSP adaptation. Major scenes use partial character voice acting, and the release adds spoken lines for Yuichi, voiced by Tomokazu Sugita; the protagonist had not been voiced in the earlier game versions cited by Prototype. The game also has a capture feature that lets players save scenes to a Memory Stick, with the stored images usable as PSP custom-theme pictures. These additions suit a story designed around character expressions, dialogue, and the atmosphere of its wintry setting.
Kanon PSP occupies an important place in the early catalogue of Key, the studio also associated with AIR and CLANNAD. Its route-based structure, school-life setting, and recurring ideas of memory and small miracles make it a representative Japanese visual novel of its era, while the PSP release offered a convenient way to experience the story away from a PC or television. For players interested in a character-focused, replayable narrative rather than reflex challenges, the game’s five routes provide several paths through the same snow-covered town.
