About
Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie for PSP is Ubisoft's 2005 action-adventure adaptation of Peter Jackson's King Kong film. Released in North America on December 20, 2005, this PlayStation Portable edition brings the expedition to Skull Island to the handheld, with Ubisoft as publisher and Phoenix Studio associated with the adaptation. Its story follows the film's 1933 setting: filmmaker Carl Denham's crew reaches a mysterious island, where playwright Jack Driscoll searches for Ann Darrow after she is taken by Kong. The campaign shifts between the vulnerable human survivor and the colossal ape at the center of the tale.
Most of the adventure places the player in Jack's first-person viewpoint. Rather than treating Skull Island as a shooting gallery, the game frames ammunition, weapons, and nearby creatures as practical survival concerns. Jack can use firearms including pistols, shotguns, sniper rifles, and machine guns, but he can carry only one firearm alongside a spear. Spears can repel threats, and the game lets players use prey and carcasses to draw predators away or create an opening. Fire has a similar tactical role: ignited spears can set brush alight, helping Jack alter a dangerous encounter instead of relying only on gunfire.
Skull Island is populated by the creatures devised for the 2005 film, including Venatosaurus, giant crabs, Megapedes, and the formidable V-Rex. The manual's food-chain systems make the setting more than scenery: smaller animals can be used as bait, while dead creatures may attract something larger. Jack is not equipped to solve every encounter by force, particularly against the V-Rex, so escaping, diverting enemies, working with companions, and finding a route forward remain central to progression. The story moves through jungle, cliffs, ruins, and waterways as the group attempts to reunite with Ann and survive the island's predators.
Kong chapters change the scale and controls completely. Seen from a third-person perspective, Kong can jump, climb vine-covered surfaces and columns, swing across gaps, and clear blocked paths by lifting huge objects. His combat is built around punches, dodges, grabs, throws, bites, and a rage-powered attack state. Kong can seize enemies or environmental objects to use as weapons, while close encounters with V-Rexes lead to special finishing moves. This alternating structure gives Peter Jackson's King Kong PSP two contrasting ways to experience the same journey: Jack must improvise with limited tools, while Kong relies on strength, mobility, and direct combat to protect Ann.
The PSP version preserves the campaign's deliberately sparse presentation. It does not use a conventional on-screen HUD or inventory display; Jack can check his spare ammunition through an audio cue, keeping the view focused on the environment. Players may select from three control layouts, replay unlocked chapters, and save progress at checkpoints. It also adds PSP Ad Hoc multiplayer for two systems. In cooperative play, participants share a map and score for damage dealt against tougher enemies; competitive play turns each enemy kill into an obstacle for the other player. These portable-specific options sit alongside a cinematic film tie-in that expands the journey through Skull Island with its own playable encounters and locations.
