About
Sid Meier's Pirates! PSP brings the 2004 revival of Sid Meier's Caribbean adventure to PlayStation Portable in 2007. Developed for the handheld by Full Fat in collaboration with Firaxis Games and published by 2K, it is a strategy-adventure game built around the changing fortunes of a young sea captain. The PSP edition adapts the earlier Windows and Xbox release for portable play while retaining its mix of free-roaming sailing, trade, combat, exploration and personal ambition. A new career can begin in different historical eras, with a chosen nationality and a captain trait that helps shape the opening voyage.
The adventure starts after the hero escapes a Spanish nobleman's attempt to enslave his family and reaches the Caribbean. From there, the player can pursue the central search for lost relatives and revenge, or make a name through piracy, privateering, commerce and service to one of the colonial powers. The campaign is intentionally open-ended: ports, missions, pirate havens and settlements offer leads, cargo, upgrades and opportunities, while the political balance between England, France, Spain and the Netherlands can change the risks and rewards of a voyage. A captain eventually ages, so building fame and wealth must be balanced against keeping a crew fed, paid and loyal.
Most journeys unfold on the Caribbean sailing map. The player directs a flagship with the PSP controls, watches the wind, avoids hazardous waters and decides whether another vessel is worth chasing or escaping. Captured ships can yield money, trade goods, cannon, recruits and specialists, and a growing fleet creates its own choices about speed and upkeep. Naval engagements combine ship handling with broadsides and boarding attempts. Different ammunition can be used for different purposes, while ship size, crew strength, wind direction and manoeuvrability influence whether an encounter is best settled by cannon fire, a pursuit or a close-quarters assault.
Pirates! is also a collection of connected action and strategy challenges rather than only a sailing game. Sword-fighting duels can decide a boarding action, a tavern dispute or a confrontation with a rival. Attacking a defended town can lead to turn-based land battles, where units move across woods, hills and open ground before the victor reaches the gates. In towns, the captain may trade, repair vessels, visit taverns for intelligence, seek appointments from governors or court a governor's daughter through dance sequences. These activities feed back into the wider career, since rank, alliances, treasure, romance and the captain's reputation open or close different paths.
Full Fat made several changes specifically for the PlayStation Portable version. Its presentation uses the system's widescreen display, and the handheld release adds extra treasure missions and locations. Instead of simply confirming a marked landing point, its treasure hunts put a small party ashore to search for the red X while dealing with dangers such as traps and jaguars. The sneaking sequences in hostile ports were also adjusted to grid-based movement, making timing and guard sightlines central to reaching a tavern or governor's residence. Dance inputs were revised for the portable controls as well, giving this edition its own handling of familiar activities.
The PSP game also supports local wireless ad hoc multiplayer for up to four players, a feature that distinguishes it from a strictly solitary voyage. Its broad structure remains connected to Sid Meier's original 1987 Pirates! concept, but this version uses the 2004 remake's 3D Caribbean and its varied mini-games. Whether the goal is to capture famous pirate rivals, unearth hidden wealth, change a colony's allegiance or retire with a celebrated name, Sid Meier's Pirates! PSP lets each career develop from the player's decisions at sea and ashore.
