About

Tenchu: Shadow Assassins for PSP is a single-player stealth action game released in 2009. Developed by Acquire, the studio that created the original Tenchu, it was published in Japan by FromSoftware and brought to Western territories by Ubisoft. Known in Japan as Tenchu 4, this handheld version follows the Wii release of the same story and returns the series to feudal Japan, where Azuma ninja Rikimaru and Ayame serve Lord Gohda. Its missions make patience, observation, and a clean escape as important as the sword.

The central task is to enter guarded locations, reach an objective, and avoid turning each encounter into an open fight. Rikimaru and Ayame move through villages, estates, forts, and other hostile spaces while watching patrol routes and using cover. A stealth indicator communicates whether the ninja is concealed, being investigated, or discovered, while Ninja Vision can reveal enemy sight lines and available hiding places. Remaining unseen opens the way for a close-range hissatsu, the series' signature stealth kill; alert guards instead force a much riskier confrontation.

The PSP control scheme was redesigned around the portable's buttons rather than the Wii version's motion controls. The analog stick handles movement, the face buttons are used for actions such as attacking, jumping, and initiating a stealth kill, and the directional pad cycles through carried equipment. Running can get a character to a destination quickly but can attract attention, so careful movement and well-timed dashes between cover are often safer. The game also lets players interact with the environment, including climbing to higher routes, extinguishing lights, moving objects, and using shadows or concealment to stay out of a guard's view.

Rikimaru and Ayame share the campaign but bring different strengths to their assignments. Rikimaru is the more direct of the two, while Ayame is faster and has stages built around more involved use of the surroundings. Their investigation begins amid rumors of betrayal in Lord Gohda's territory and grows into a conflict involving the kidnapping of Princess Kiku. The story campaign contains ten missions, with Rikimaru handling the opening stretch and finale and Ayame taking the middle missions. Familiar Tenchu figures, including Lord Gohda and the demon ninja Onikage, place the adventure within the wider series.

Tools broaden the stealth approach beyond simply waiting behind a corner. Players can select items to distract guards, create an opening, or investigate an area without exposing the ninja. One unusual tool is the shinobi cat, which can be sent ahead as a scout as well as used to divert attention. The main story is supplemented by 50 short Assignment missions, which unlock as progress is made and provide additional objectives apart from the campaign. Completing Assignments can also open bonus material, giving the PSP game a separate set of challenges for players who want to keep practicing its covert techniques.

Tenchu: Shadow Assassins is both a continuation of the long-running Tenchu saga and a PSP adaptation of a game first released for Wii in 2008. The shift from Wii Remote motion actions to button inputs makes its stealth kills and environmental actions work within the limits of Sony's handheld, while retaining the over-the-shoulder presentation and methodical mission structure. For players exploring the Tenchu series on PSP, it offers a 2009 chapter centered on Rikimaru and Ayame, deliberate infiltration, and the tension of slipping through feudal-Japanese strongholds without raising the alarm.
