About
Ninja Katsugeki: Tenchu San Portable is the 2009 PlayStation Portable version of Tenchu 3, the stealth-action adventure first known internationally as Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven. Published in Japan by FromSoftware, it brings the third main Tenchu story to PSP after the original PlayStation 2 release developed by K2. The game places its missions in a stylised, supernatural vision of feudal Japan, where careful infiltration matters as much as swordplay. This Japanese portable release preserves the series’ focus on ninja work for Lord Gohda: slipping into guarded territory, completing an assigned objective and escaping before a difficult situation becomes a direct fight.
The central campaign follows Azuma clan ninjas Rikimaru and Ayame. Rikimaru fights with the sword Izayoi, while Ayame’s paired blades suit a more acrobatic fighting style. Their routes tell connected parts of a conflict involving the sorcerer Tenrai, his followers and the Three Jewels. A third playable lead, Tesshu Fujioka, approaches the same dangerous world from outside Lord Gohda’s service. A doctor in public life and a vigilante assassin at night, Tesshu has his own missions, unarmed combat style and methods of dispatching enemies. Choosing different characters therefore changes more than appearance: it opens distinct scenarios and gives the story several perspectives.
Ninja Katsugeki: Tenchu San Portable is built around observation and timing. Before a mission, players select from tools that can help them create openings, distract guards, recover health or deal with threats at range. A grappling hook allows access to elevated paths and rooftops, making vertical movement part of planning a route. In the field, awareness of enemy position is vital. Approaching an unsuspecting target from the right angle permits a decisive stealth kill, whereas an alert guard can turn the encounter into close combat. The game rewards players for treating a level as a problem to solve rather than simply clearing every opponent by force.
Missions range across compounds, villages and other enemy-held locations, with objectives that include espionage, theft, rescue and assassination. The campaign’s mission results grade performance, and strong stealth play can unlock additional abilities and equipment for Rikimaru and Ayame. Their special techniques develop through successful silent kills, encouraging repeat visits to stages for higher ranks. Tesshu uses a different progression economy: he can earn money during missions and spend it on his own equipment before setting out. That contrast gives his campaign a separate rhythm while retaining the same emphasis on reaching a target without letting the whole area know he is there.
The plot continues the Tenchu series after earlier struggles involving Lord Mei-Oh. Rikimaru’s apparent loss casts a shadow over the opening, while Ayame’s search and the return of familiar adversary Onikage connect the game to the wider Azuma ninja storyline. Tenrai’s pursuit of the Three Jewels brings together human enemies, strange inventions and supernatural opponents, so the game moves beyond a strictly historical setting without abandoning its feudal-Japan atmosphere. Character-specific chapters converge at key events, and the changing viewpoints help explain why the three assassins are drawn into the same crisis.
This PSP edition is more than a title change. FromSoftware’s product information identifies it as a port of Tenchu 3 and notes two added stages as well as new missions and enemies. It also incorporates story content associated with the Xbox conversion, Tenchu: Return from Darkness, while omitting that version’s multiplayer. The result is a single-player handheld take on a console stealth game, with the portable title serving as a Japanese-region edition rather than a new entry unrelated to Tenchu 3.
For players exploring the Tenchu catalog, Ninja Katsugeki: Tenchu San Portable sits at an interesting point in the series’ history. It carries forward the character-led, mission-based stealth design of the early games while packaging the expanded Tenchu 3 material for PSP. Its blend of rooftop movement, ninja tools, performance ranks and multiple protagonists makes each assignment an invitation to study patrols, choose an approach and make the crucial strike before the alarm is raised.
