About
Gran Turismo PSP brings Polyphony Digital’s driving simulation series to Sony’s PlayStation Portable. Published by Sony Computer Entertainment in 2009, this is the handheld Gran Turismo release that arrived alongside the PSP Go era, not the original 1997 PlayStation game or the PlayStation 2’s Gran Turismo 4. It condenses the series’ focus on licensed cars, circuit driving, and careful vehicle selection into a portable format while retaining an unusually large garage for the system.
The game revolves around choosing a car, a circuit, and an event rather than following the traditional Gran Turismo career-map structure. Single Race, Time Trial, and Drift Trial provide the central ways to drive, while Driving Challenges set specific tests that develop car control. Events can be configured with variables such as lap count and difficulty, and successful runs award credits and cars. That structure makes Gran Turismo PSP suited both to short sessions and to steadily expanding a personal collection.
Its vehicle roster contains more than 800 licensed automobiles, spanning ordinary road cars, sports machines, race cars, and historic models. Manufacturers including Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti, and others appear in the main series for the first time here. Dealership stock changes as play progresses, so building a garage involves watching the available selection as well as earning the credits needed to make purchases. Four cars share the track in a race: the player and three computer-controlled opponents.
Gran Turismo PSP offers 35 licensed and fictional circuits with 60 layouts, including variations that substantially change a familiar course. The selection ranges from asphalt racing venues to dirt running, and many courses can be driven in reverse. The game’s compact race fields and PSP controls put the emphasis on choosing a suitable car, braking accurately, carrying speed through corners, and adapting to each track’s surface and layout.
Local competition is a key part of the PSP version. Ad Hoc wireless play supports races for up to four players, while Party and Shuffle Race options adjust the starting conditions or car line-up to keep contests close for people with different experience levels. Players can also trade cars through the handheld’s local wireless functions, giving the garage-building side of Gran Turismo PSP a social dimension beyond solo races and challenges.
The release followed a lengthy development period in which it was publicly known by several working names, including Gran Turismo 4 Mobile and Gran Turismo Portable. Polyphony Digital ultimately released it simply as Gran Turismo, with the PSP platform distinguishing it from the earlier console games. Its combination of a deep car catalogue, broad circuit selection, driving challenges, and local multiplayer made it a distinctive portable entry in the Gran Turismo series.
