About
The Lord of the Rings: Conquest for Nintendo DS is a 2009 action game published by Electronic Arts and developed for the handheld by Artificial Mind and Movement. Drawing on the look, characters, and battles of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, it sends players into Middle-earth conflicts from the viewpoint of ordinary combatants rather than following a single travelling hero. This is a purpose-built Nintendo DS version, not a direct reproduction of the contemporary PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 releases: it presents the fighting from an isometric angle and reshapes the larger game's formula for a portable system.
The central activity is territory fighting. A player chooses a side, enters a battlefield, defeats opposing forces, and works toward map objectives such as taking control points. The game frames these skirmishes around the struggle between the Free Peoples and the armies serving Sauron, so familiar locations and figures from the film adaptation supply the setting even when the action focuses on repeated clashes for ground. Battles can be approached through the campaign, through Instant Action, or through Conquest play, giving the cartridge both structured scenarios and stand-alone matches.
Class selection determines how a character handles a fight. Warriors are the close-range option, while archers attack from a distance and mages bring magical attacks to the field. This selection is an important distinction for the Nintendo DS game, whose available roles and battlefield features differ from those in the console and computer versions. The handheld edition does not include the Scout class or rideable mounts, concentrating its smaller-scale encounters on the three available combat styles and their use around objectives.
Characters do not remain equally powerful throughout a match. Defeated foes can leave behind orbs, and gathering them strengthens the current character's attack power and speed. That temporary growth adds a reason to press an advantage after a successful exchange, but it is not permanent progression: the accumulated boosts are lost when the character respawns. Results screens after levels record performance and can award in-game achievements for particular accomplishments, adding goals beyond simply finishing the immediate battle.
The Lord of the Rings: Conquest Nintendo DS also includes opportunities to use notable Middle-earth figures, including heroes such as Aragorn and Ringwraiths, alongside larger creatures. Its wireless multiplayer supports two players, while the single-player content lets one person take either the Good or Evil side of the conflict. The evil material explores an alternate outcome in which Frodo does not destroy the One Ring, extending the film-based premise beyond a straightforward retelling of the trilogy's conclusion.
Released in North America on January 13, 2009, The Lord of the Rings: Conquest arrived during a period when Electronic Arts was producing several games based on Tolkien's world. Pandemic Studios led the better-known versions for other platforms, but Artificial Mind and Movement's DS adaptation has its own perspective, character options, and portable match structure. For players looking for a Nintendo DS Lord of the Rings game centered on battlefield objectives, selectable combat roles, and the chance to fight for either side of Middle-earth, it remains a distinct entry in that licensed game line.
