About
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed for Nintendo DS is a 2008 action-adventure game developed by n-Space and published by LucasArts. Released for Nintendo's dual-screen handheld alongside several very different versions of the same project, it tells the story of Darth Vader's secret apprentice in the years between the prequel and original Star Wars trilogies. Players take control of the formidable Force user known as Starkiller as he carries out covert Imperial assignments, hunts surviving Jedi, and becomes caught in a struggle that reaches toward the birth of the Rebel Alliance.
The Nintendo DS game approaches its third-person battles with an interface built around the system's two screens. The upper display presents the 3D action while the lower touch screen provides a layout of commands for movement and combat. Taps activate individual actions, and stylus strokes across adjoining areas can trigger more involved attacks. That design makes the lightsaber and Force powers central to play while giving this portable version a control scheme distinct from the motion-controlled Wii game and the high-definition console editions.
Starkiller's missions combine close-range lightsaber strikes with Force-based attacks against Imperial troops, hostile creatures, and Jedi opponents. Combat asks players to pick attacks from the touch interface, move through enclosed locations, and respond to waves of enemies as the campaign proceeds. The adventure includes familiar Star Wars settings and faces from the era, with Darth Vader overseeing his apprentice's early work and Starkiller's loyalties changing as he encounters allies and opponents beyond the Empire's control.
Story progression is the focus of the single-player campaign. Starkiller travels with the pilot Juno Eclipse and the training droid PROXY while pursuing assignments that reveal more about his past and Vader's plans. Encounters with characters such as Rahm Kota, Bail Organa, Princess Leia, and Darth Vader connect the game to the wider Star Wars timeline. The narrative builds toward a final confrontation in which the player's choice leads to one of two outcomes, giving the campaign a reason to revisit its conclusion.
The DS release also includes local wireless multiplayer for up to four players, turning the handheld version into a small-group competitive game in addition to its solo story. Its multiplayer options include a free-for-all battle and a head-to-head contest, making use of the system's wireless link rather than the online features associated with later platforms. This mode is one of the notable differences between the Nintendo DS game and several other releases carrying the same title.
As part of the 2008 The Force Unleashed multimedia project, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed on Nintendo DS is a platform-specific adaptation rather than a direct duplicate of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game. n-Space compressed the saga's secret-apprentice premise into a handheld action game with stylus-driven combat and local multiplayer, while LucasArts used the project to explore a previously unfilled stretch of the Star Wars timeline. For players looking for the Nintendo DS version, those touchscreen mechanics and portable battle modes are the features that most clearly set it apart.
