About

Spider-Man 3 for Nintendo DS is a 2007 action game developed by Vicarious Visions and published by Activision. Loosely based on the Spider-Man 3 film, this handheld version follows Peter Parker as he protects New York from threats including the New Goblin, Sandman, and Venom. It shares the movie tie-in’s characters and symbiote storyline, but it is not a scaled-down version of the console open-world games. Instead, the Nintendo DS release presents Spider-Man’s adventure as a side-scrolling 3D action experience designed around the system’s two screens and stylus controls.

Players guide Spider-Man through levels that combine traversal, combat, and objectives drawn from the film’s conflict as well as encounters with characters from the wider comic-book world. The action is seen from a side-on viewpoint while environments and character models use 3D presentation. Spider-Man can cling to walls, cross gaps with web moves, battle groups of enemies, and advance through a succession of missions rather than roam a free-roaming Manhattan. This structure gives each area a clear destination while still making the wall-crawler’s movement and close-quarters fighting central to progress.

The Touch Screen is the defining feature of Spider-Man 3 NDS. Rather than simply providing a map or menu, it handles much of Spider-Man’s offense and interaction. Stylus gestures are used to trigger attacks, web actions, and context-sensitive moves, while the rest of the Nintendo DS controls support movement through the stage. The result is a version built specifically for the handheld’s input design: players alternate between navigating the upper-screen action and drawing commands on the lower screen when enemies, obstacles, or interactive objects call for Spider-Man’s powers.

The black symbiote suit is also an important part of the DS game. Spider-Man can put it on when needed to become quicker, stronger, and more aggressive in battle, echoing the change in Peter’s behavior from the film. The suit is not an unlimited answer to every fight, however. Its use is tied to Spider-Man’s condition, and it becomes unavailable when his health is too low. Choosing when to rely on its added power gives the costume a mechanical role beyond its place in the story.

Alongside its single-player campaign, Spider-Man 3 supports wireless multiplayer on Nintendo DS. That feature, the 3D side-scrolling format, and the extensive touch-screen handling separate it from the PlayStation, Xbox, and PC editions released around the same time. Released on May 4, 2007, the game arrived during a period when movie adaptations commonly appeared across many systems, but Vicarious Visions gave the DS edition its own controls, progression, and platform-specific interpretation of Spider-Man’s black-suit adventure.
