About
Diddy Kong Racing DS for Nintendo DS is a 2007 racing-adventure game developed by Rare and published by Nintendo. Released in North America in February 2007 and in Europe and Australia that April, it revisits Rare’s Nintendo 64 racer for Nintendo’s dual-screen handheld. Rather than presenting a straight conversion, the game retains the island-spanning race campaign and its three vehicle types while adding DS-focused controls, fresh courses, revised character choices, and multiplayer options.
The adventure begins when the intergalactic pig wizard Wizpig disrupts the peace of Timber’s Island. Diddy Kong answers Timber the Tiger’s call for help, joined by friends including Dixie Kong, Tiny Kong, Krunch, Tiptup, Pipsy, and Bumper. The central single-player Adventure mode turns the island into a connected racing hub: players travel between themed areas, enter events, win golden balloons, and use those balloons to open further routes and challenges. Boss races against the island’s guardians stand apart from the regular competitions, and the larger objective is to earn a chance to confront Wizpig himself.
Races can be contested in karts, hovercraft, and airplanes, so the choice of vehicle is an important part of navigating each course. Karts provide the conventional ground-racing approach, hovercraft handle water and other mixed terrain, and airplanes take the action into the air. Tracks place bananas on the route to build speed, along with colored balloons that supply items such as missiles, boosts, shields, traps, and magnets. Picking up matching balloons can strengthen an item, giving the game a layer of tactical timing beyond simply finding the fastest racing line. Courses also feature zippers that offer bursts of speed when used well.
Diddy Kong Racing DS preserves the original game’s mixture of circuit races, challenges, exploration, and progression while adapting it for the handheld. Its five worlds contain a range of events and unlockable content, and four additional tracks expand the Nintendo 64 selection. The remake also changes the character roster: Banjo and Conker, who appeared in the earlier version, are absent here, while Dixie and Tiny Kong join Diddy. Taj and Wizpig are included as additional playable characters, making the DS release more closely tied to the Donkey Kong cast while keeping the series’ unusual racing-adventure setting intact.
Rare also built several Nintendo DS features into the package. A track editor lets players draw a route on the touch screen and turn it into a raceable course, which can be used in single-player and multiplayer play. The touch screen can be used to create a player icon and alter trackside billboard artwork, while the system microphone allows recorded sounds to be assigned to in-game actions. Touch and microphone inputs are also used for starting boosts: players can spin a wheel or propeller for karts and airplanes, or blow into the microphone for a hovercraft launch.
Multiplayer gives Diddy Kong Racing DS another use for its vehicle variety and item system. Up to eight players can race through local wireless play, using either one game card or multiple cards depending on the mode, and the original release also supported Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection races and course sharing. With its hub-based campaign, boss encounters, three ways to travel, and handheld-specific creation tools, Diddy Kong Racing DS remains a distinctive entry in Nintendo DS racing games and a substantial reworking of Rare’s Nintendo 64 classic.
