About
FIFA 09 for Nintendo DS brings EA Sports' 2008 football season to the dual-screen handheld in a version built around fast, portable matches. Published by Electronic Arts under the EA Sports label, it arrived in October 2008 as FIFA Soccer 09 in North America. The Nintendo DS edition has its own production history: its credits include teams at EA Canada and Exient Entertainment, rather than simply being a reduced copy of the console releases. It presents licensed club and international football in the annual FIFA format, with a large selection of teams and leagues to take from kickoff to a full campaign.
On the pitch, FIFA 09 uses the Nintendo DS controls to put passing, shooting, tackling and player movement in the player's hands. Its DS-focused engine was designed to keep the action moving at a high frame rate, so attacks can be built through quick passes before a shot is taken around the area or from distance. Contextual shooting gives the player a choice between a placed attempt and a harder hit, while new animations and defensive slide tackles add options for stopping a pass or blocking a shot. The result is a compact football game that still asks players to judge space, time a challenge and find a teammate in a crowded move forward.
The major addition for this handheld entry is Be A Pro, making its Nintendo DS debut in FIFA 09. Instead of managing every player by constantly switching control, this mode lets the player select a professional footballer or create one, then concentrate on an outfield role. A dedicated camera follows that footballer, and real-time performance feedback reflects how well the player is contributing during the match. Across multiple seasons, the aim is to develop the chosen player's abilities and build a career toward national-team recognition, making positioning and off-the-ball work as important as the moments when the ball arrives.
FIFA 09 also supports several ways to play with other people. Local wireless play includes a single-card option for a head-to-head match with another DS owner, so only one copy of the game is needed for that kind of friendly. The game also allows up to four players to take specific footballers from a favourite club rather than continually switching among the whole side. Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection was originally available for online matches, although that service was later discontinued; the cartridge's offline modes remain the way to play today.
The presentation reflects the licensed scope expected from a FIFA release of the period. Players can choose from more than 500 licensed teams across 30 leagues, giving club fixtures and international selections a broad range of opponents. Regional branding varies, with FIFA Soccer 09 used for the North American release, but the core Nintendo DS game shares the same focus on quick, accessible association football. Within the long-running FIFA series, FIFA 09 stands out on the system for bringing the player-career angle of Be A Pro to the DS while preserving match play, local competition and season-based football in a format suited to short sessions or longer campaigns.
