About
Gyakuten Kenji 2 for Nintendo DS is Capcom's 2011 adventure-mystery game and the direct sequel to Gyakuten Kenji, known internationally as Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth. It puts prosecutor Miles Edgeworth at the center of a five-case investigation rather than behind the bench in a conventional courtroom drama. Released in Japan on February 3, 2011, the Nintendo DS original was developed and published by Capcom as part of the Ace Attorney series' tenth-anniversary period. Its first official English title, Ace Attorney Investigations 2: Prosecutor's Gambit, arrived much later in the 2024 Ace Attorney Investigations Collection.
The game retains the Investigations branch's distinctive approach to the series: Edgeworth walks around crime scenes directly, examines objects, speaks with witnesses and suspects, and adds useful material to his evidence and thought records. Progress depends on piecing together what the player has learned, including through the Logic system, which lets Edgeworth connect related observations to form new deductions. Once enough leads have been gathered, tense rebuttal sequences ask the player to press statements for details and present the right item of evidence when a contradiction appears. Incorrect challenges can bring penalties, so close reading and careful use of the case file matter.
Gyakuten Kenji 2 expands that formula with Mind Chess, a timed conversational duel used when a reluctant person will not reveal what they know. Rather than being a literal chess match, it represents Edgeworth gauging when to listen, when to press forward, and when to make a decisive point before the opportunity disappears. The Little Thief device also returns, producing holographic recreations of locations that Edgeworth can explore and revise as new facts emerge. These reconstructions occasionally allow comparisons between a scene at different moments, giving the player another way to test an account of events against physical clues.
Set shortly after the first Investigations game, the story follows Edgeworth with familiar partners Detective Dick Gumshoe and Kay Faraday as seemingly separate incidents begin to form a larger pattern. Returning figures from across the Ace Attorney world appear alongside new opponents, including a judge connected to a committee scrutinizing prosecutors. One extended flashback also lets players investigate from the perspective of Edgeworth's father, Gregory, adding historical context to the younger Edgeworth's pursuit of the truth. The focus remains on unraveling mysteries through testimony, evidence, and cause-and-effect reasoning, with the series' stylized character animation and dialogue-driven presentation supporting each case.
On Nintendo DS, the game used the dual-screen handheld format for its investigation interface and case information. It was first announced in 2010, appeared at Tokyo Game Show that year, and reached Japan in several editions, including collector-oriented packages. Although the original DS release did not receive an official English localization at the time, Capcom later brought the game to Android and iOS in Japan in 2017. The 2024 Ace Attorney Investigations Collection subsequently made both Investigations games available internationally, preserving the second game's place as an important Miles Edgeworth-led chapter while introducing its official English name to a wider audience.
For Ace Attorney players, Gyakuten Kenji 2 offers a change of perspective: the familiar prosecution character is responsible for pursuing the facts before any trial can begin. Its linked five-case structure, evidence-based rebuttals, movement around scenes, Logic deductions, Little Thief reconstructions, and Mind Chess conversations distinguish it from the main courtroom-focused entries. It works as a sequel with numerous returning characters and references, but its central purpose is clear on its own: guide Edgeworth through a chain of investigations, expose inconsistencies, and follow each clue until the underlying truth is established.
