About
Iron Man 2 for Nintendo DS is a 2010 side-scrolling action game from Griptonite Games, published by Sega. Released in North America on May 4, 2010, it arrived alongside the film tie-in but presents a separate story set in the wider Iron Man world rather than simply replaying the movie. This handheld edition is a distinct version of Iron Man 2, built around 2D scrolling stages and the Nintendo DS’s dual-screen controls. Players take the role of Tony Stark as Iron Man or James Rhodes as War Machine in a single-player campaign of armored combat.
The two heroes are designed to play differently. Iron Man is the more mobile fighter: he can move through stages with the directional controls, take to the air, boost while flying, and use his suit’s weapon systems against mechanical enemies. War Machine trades that agility for heavier ballistic firepower. His controls make especially direct use of the DS hardware, with movement handled on the directional pad while the touch screen is used to aim his weapons around the battlefield. Lock-on support helps him target foes and launch missiles, giving the two armored heroes noticeably different approaches to the same action.
Stages combine side-view combat with flight-oriented sequences. The campaign sends its heroes through comic-book-inspired confrontations against hostile machines and supervillain threats, including Crimson Dynamo. Enemies come from the game’s original storyline, which extends beyond the events of the 2010 film. Between exchanges of punches, repulsor attacks, missiles, and other ranged fire, players advance through missions as either hero. The format keeps the focus on clearing opposition, surviving boss encounters, and using the appropriate character’s movement and weapons to deal with each situation.
Iron Man 2 on DS also gives players reasons to revisit missions. Challenges can unlock additional armor, and both Iron Man and War Machine have multiple suits available. Upgrades can be bought and fitted between missions, allowing equipment to be tailored to a preferred style of play. Collectibles, including comic-cover and concept-art material, are placed throughout the game. These systems add a progression layer to a game whose immediate action is rooted in simple 2D shooting, close-range attacks, and aerial maneuvering.
The Nintendo DS release should not be confused with the console, PSP, Wii, or mobile editions of Iron Man 2. Griptonite created the DS game specifically for the handheld, while other studios handled the versions on other systems; their layouts and mechanics differ. Sega released the game as Iron Man 2 in North America, while the European DS release was also known as Iron Man 2: The Video Game. For players looking for a Marvel action game that makes the most of the DS touch screen, its contrasting Iron Man and War Machine control schemes are the defining feature of this compact 2010 adaptation.
