About
Virtua Cop: Elite Edition for PlayStation 2 is a 2002 light-gun shooter compilation that brings Sega’s Virtua Cop and Virtua Cop 2 together on one disc. Released in Europe by Acclaim Entertainment, it arrived as VIRTUA COP Re-Birth in Japan, where Sega issued it on 15 August 2002. Rather than a newly made third entry, this is a home collection of two arcade-style rail shooters originally associated with Sega AM2, built around fast target acquisition, branching camera movement, and co-operative police action.
Both included games put players in the role of Virtua City officers Michael “Rage” Hardy and James “Smarty” Cools. From a first-person viewpoint, the action moves automatically through crime scenes while the player aims at armed suspects as they emerge from doorways, windows, vehicles, and cover. The central goal is straightforward: clear each sequence before the officers run out of lives. Hits from criminals are dangerous, but so is firing on civilians, who regularly cross the screen or become caught in the action. That combination makes careful identification as important as quick reflexes.
A six-shot sidearm sets the rhythm of play. Players reload after emptying the chamber, then resume firing as the scrolling route carries them into the next encounter. Targets can be handled in more than one way: shooting an opponent’s weapon hand can disarm them for a justice shot, while accurate shots at target markers add score. Pickups can provide benefits such as extra lives or more powerful weapons, but damage can cost a player a temporary weapon. The games therefore reward accuracy and awareness alongside rapid shooting instead of treating every visible figure as a target.
Virtua Cop: Elite Edition preserves the series’ arcade structure with three stages from Virtua Cop and three from Virtua Cop 2, each divided into multiple action scenes. The first game follows the officers’ pursuit of the E.V.I.L. Inc. crime syndicate after a detective investigating its gunrunning operation is murdered. Its sequel shifts to another escalating case for the pair, taking them through larger set pieces as they confront a new criminal threat. Across both games, the camera supplies the motion and spectacle while players concentrate on aiming, reloading, protecting bystanders, and surviving ambushes.
The PlayStation 2 version supports Namco’s G-Con 2 light gun, making it suited to the point-and-shoot style of the arcade originals, while standard controller play provides another way to tackle the cases. Two players can work through the action together, with Michael and James serving as the selectable officers. Difficulty choices and options including continues, reload behavior, and enemy indicators let players tailor the challenge. The collection also includes a gallery of bonus material that can be unlocked through play, giving repeat runs a goal beyond simply reaching the ending.
Its regional identity is a key part of this release. Japanese players received the disc as VIRTUA COP Re-Birth from Sega, while the European version was named Virtua Cop: Elite Edition and published by Acclaim Entertainment on 29 November 2002. The collection revisits games that helped establish the Virtua Cop series’ polygonal, moving-camera approach to the light-gun shooter in the mid-1990s. For PlayStation 2 players, it packages the original pair’s short, score-driven cases, co-operative play, and recognizable police-duo setup into a single edition.
