About

Resident Evil: Dead Aim for PlayStation 2 is a 2003 action-horror shooter developed by Cavia and published by Capcom. Known in Japan as Gun Survivor 4: Biohazard: Heroes Never Die, it is the fourth and final Gun Survivor game and a Resident Evil side story built around exploration as well as shooting. The story follows U.S. government agent Bruce McGivern, dispatched to investigate a biohazard aboard the Umbrella-owned ocean liner Spencer Rain after former Umbrella employee Morpheus D. Duvall seizes control of it.

Dead Aim combines two camera styles in a way that sets it apart from the earlier Gun Survivor releases. Players guide Bruce through the ship in a third-person view, then shift to a first-person perspective when raising a weapon. A central aiming marker helps line up shots, and the game permits movement while aiming, turning confrontations with zombies and other Bio-Organic Weapons into more mobile encounters than a fixed-path light-gun game. It can be played with a standard DualShock 2 controller, while support for the GunCon 2 light gun gives the shooting sections a dedicated arcade-style option.

The mission begins with Bruce searching the ravaged liner, where its passages, cabins, decks, and service areas have become dangerous spaces filled with infected creatures. Progress depends on more than clearing enemies: players search rooms, collect key items, solve environmental puzzles, restore access to blocked routes, and manage weapons and ammunition. Handguns are joined by heavier firearms as the operation expands, but conserving supplies remains important when enemies are difficult to eliminate quickly.

Bruce's investigation intersects with Fong Ling, an operative sent by Chinese intelligence to pursue the same outbreak. Their governments do not begin as allies, yet the two agents work toward stopping Morpheus before he can use stolen viral material as leverage. After the crisis on the Spencer Rain escalates, the setting moves beyond the ship to an Umbrella facility, widening the operation from a confined maritime search to a race to prevent a wider bioterrorist attack.

The PlayStation 2 presentation uses real-time 3D environments and frequent perspective changes to place Dead Aim between Resident Evil survival horror and light-gun shooting. Instead of placing the player on an automatically moving rail, it lets them choose where to explore, retreat, and investigate. This structure preserves familiar series elements such as locked doors, item-based progression, hostile experiments, and confrontations with large creatures while giving the Gun Survivor format a more exploratory role.

As a Resident Evil spin-off, Dead Aim occupies a distinct place in the series' early-2000s output. It follows the franchise's themes of Umbrella experimentation and international response to viral weapons without retelling the events of a numbered entry. Its Japanese title makes its Gun Survivor lineage explicit, while the Western Resident Evil name emphasizes its connection to Capcom's broader horror universe. For PlayStation 2 players, it remains a one-player hybrid of survival-horror investigation and first-person target shooting designed around the console's controller and light-gun hardware.
