About

Backyard Baseball '09 is a lighthearted, arcade-style baseball game in the Backyard Sports series. FarSight Technologies developed the PlayStation 2 edition and Atari published it in North America on June 10, 2008. Its playground setting, cartoon presentation, and simplified controls frame licensed Major League Baseball material for a younger audience.

Players build a lineup from familiar Backyard Kids and child versions of Major League players. Pablo Sanchez, Joey MacAdoo, Ernie Steele, and Tony Delvecchio are among the returning fictional athletes, while David Ortiz, Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Albert Pujols, Ichiro Suzuki, Ken Griffey Jr., and Daisuke Matsuzaka are among the selectable pros. MLB uniforms and logos are represented, and the game includes 11 Backyard teams alongside the licensed clubs.

Teams can be customized by selecting players, arranging a batting order, assigning defensive positions, and creating a custom player or team. Individual abilities cover categories including power, contact, pitching, catching, fielding, and stamina, making roster balance and positioning increasingly important at higher difficulty settings.

At the plate, on the mound, and in the field, the PS2 game uses straightforward controller inputs for swings, pitches, throws, and defensive plays. Its arcade rules are supplemented by a power-up meter: successful play can charge special batting or pitching effects, including Freeze Ball and Splitter-style pitches. These abilities add an exaggerated option to ordinary baseball decisions rather than replacing them entirely.

The PS2 edition offers Play Now and Pickup Game for quick matches; Pickup Game gives players control over teams, players, and venue. Tournament mode uses an eight-team bracket, while Season Game offers 16- or 32-game schedules. Season play records player statistics, milestones, and awards, and its progress opens additional content.

Home Run Derby lets up to four selected batters compete for long balls, while the Backyard Baseball All-Star Game matches American League and National League all-star lineups. Season unlockables include additional fields and players such as Babe Ruth and Alfonso Soriano, giving longer play a clear progression path beyond a single exhibition.

This is the PlayStation 2 release, not the Nintendo DS version. It uses conventional gamepad play rather than the DS touch-screen batting, fielding, pitching, and running controls, and its local multiplayer options should not be confused with the handheld edition's wireless multiplayer promotion. The PS2 release also differs from the Wii version, whose motion-control option is absent here.
