About

BMX XXX is a freestyle BMX action-sports game developed by Z-Axis and published by AKA Acclaim for PlayStation 2 in North America on November 15, 2002. It grew out of the Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX line and retains that series’ trick-focused riding framework, but presents it with fictional riders, an irreverent tone, and mature-rated material rather than licensed-star branding.

The central Hardcore Tour is built around freely exploring large urban and outdoor riding areas instead of racing from point to point. Riders can enter a level without a running clock, find pedestrians who offer timed challenges, and work through objectives to open more content. The campaign spans eight sizeable levels, with its progression driven by completed tasks, collectible items, score requirements, and competition results.

Riding combines aerial tricks, grinds, wall rides, wall taps, fast plants, and flatland moves. Trick inputs use a direction with a trick button and a modifier, allowing variations and chained combinations before landing. Scoring rewards completed tricks and combos, while a health meter falls after crashes; clearing goals restores health, but running out can end an attempt and matters most in demanding score and collection challenges.

Objectives mix familiar action-sports challenges with deliberately strange errands. A level may ask for a target score, a long combo, a trick at a particular location, or the collection of objects in one run. Other goals have the player carry objects or characters on the bike’s rear pegs and deliver them elsewhere, giving the tour an objective structure beyond simply accumulating points.

Create-a-Rider lets players build a custom BMX character, including a chosen name, gender, and physical appearance, alongside a selection of pre-made riders. The game also includes local two-player modes: a straightforward score contest, a highest-combo contest, and a Boom Box challenge in which one player gathers items while the other tries to stop them with mounted weapons. These modes make the game a couch multiplayer option as well as a single-player tour.

Its Mature presentation is integral to the game’s identity, with frequent profanity, crude toilet and sexual humor, suggestive characters, and adult-themed unlockable video material. The PlayStation 2 version is notably different from the Xbox and GameCube releases: Acclaim confirmed that the PS2 edition shipped without their topless nudity, and affected full-motion-video clips were edited or replaced. Profanity and bawdy humor remain, so the PS2 release is still intended for mature audiences despite that censorship.
