About
Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Burning Earth is a 2007 action-adventure game for PlayStation 2, published by THQ and based on Nickelodeon’s animated series. It is the follow-up to the 2006 Avatar: The Last Airbender game and adapts material from the show’s second season, Book Two: Earth. The PlayStation 2 release belongs to the console version of the game, rather than the distinct handheld editions, and presents the journey as a chapter-based 3D adventure built around combat, exploration and character-specific tasks.
The story reunites Aang with Katara and Sokka as Team Avatar travels through the Earth Kingdom while the Fire Nation’s war continues. Its campaign draws on major events and locations from the television season, beginning with conflict involving General Fong and moving through Omashu, the swamp, the Earth Rumble tournament, Wan Shi Tong’s library and Lake Laogai. The narrative builds toward the threat of the Fire Nation drill at Ba Sing Se, bringing familiar rivals including Princess Azula and Prince Zuko into the action. Toph Beifong’s introduction and her decision to teach Aang earthbending are central parts of the adventure.
On PS2, players guide two characters at a time through linear stages. In solo play, the player can switch between the available heroes while an AI partner follows along; a second player can take control of the partner for local cooperative play. Aang, Katara, Sokka and Toph are joined by additional selectable allies over the course of the game, and their abilities are used both in fights and in environmental puzzles. That structure gives the campaign a party-based feel: one character may be needed to reach an obstacle, activate an object or use a bending skill, while another handles a different route or threat.
Combat is a straightforward third-person brawler system with attacks, defensive moves, jumps and character abilities. Encounters mix Fire Nation soldiers and other enemies with larger boss confrontations, while the level design adds platforms, simple navigation challenges and switches or barriers tied to the active character’s skills. The game also includes activities beyond the main story, including replayable battles and an arena mode where players can stage fights with a selection of characters. Local co-op lets friends share the main progression rather than limiting multiplayer to a separate mode.
The Burning Earth arrived during a period when Avatar: The Last Airbender was expanding well beyond television, and its visual design aims to translate the series’ locations, costumes and elemental bending into a PlayStation 2 action game. Cutscenes and recognizable story beats make it a direct companion to Book Two, while the playable cast gives fans opportunities to control heroes and supporting characters who are important to that arc. Its approachable controls, cooperative option and emphasis on familiar moments position it as a licensed adventure for younger players and viewers looking to revisit Aang’s Earth Kingdom journey.
For collectors, the PlayStation 2 edition is notable as one of the home-console versions released alongside Wii and Xbox 360, with its own controller-focused presentation and two-player local setup. It should not be confused with the Game Boy Advance or Nintendo DS versions, which are separate handheld adaptations. The game was followed in 2008 by Avatar: The Last Airbender – Into the Inferno, continuing the video-game series alongside the final television season. As a PS2-era tie-in, The Burning Earth captures the middle chapter of Aang’s quest: gaining an earthbending teacher, confronting the Fire Nation’s escalating plans and preparing for the battles ahead.
