About
Tony Hawk's American Wasteland for PlayStation 2 is a 2005 skateboarding game developed by Neversoft and published by Activision. It is the seventh main entry in the Tony Hawk's series and moves its career adventure to a stylized version of Los Angeles. The PS2 release arrived alongside the GameCube and Xbox editions in October 2005, bringing the series' familiar trick-based action to a connected city designed around street skating culture.
Story Mode follows a custom skater who leaves home for Los Angeles and quickly becomes involved with a group trying to protect its local skate scene. Early missions introduce allies such as Mindy and the reclusive former professional Iggy VanZandt, while the broader goal becomes the restoration and preservation of the Skate Ranch. The campaign sends the player across locations inspired by Hollywood, Beverly Hills, downtown, Santa Monica and East Los Angeles, meeting skaters and completing challenges as the group works to save its gathering place.
At its core, the PlayStation 2 game asks players to build high-scoring lines from grabs, flip tricks, grinds, manuals and transfers. A successful run depends on landing cleanly, keeping balance during grinds and manuals, and linking obstacles before the score multiplier is lost. Missions use that foundation in different ways: some set score targets or trick requirements, while others involve races, collection tasks, photo goals, favors for characters and routes through the city. As in earlier Tony Hawk games, learning where ramps, rails, ledges and gaps meet is central to improving both scores and access to new challenges.
American Wasteland presents its story areas as a continuous route rather than a menu of isolated stages. Paths and transitional sections connect the major districts, so the player can skate from one area toward another while pursuing the next objective. The game also adds the Bert Slide, a low sliding move that can help maintain a combo through certain spaces, and lets the skater ride BMX bicycles as well as skateboards. BMX uses the same trick-minded approach but gives the game a second way to tackle ramps, rails and open terrain.
Customization is another substantial part of the PS2 experience. Players create a skater, adjust clothing and appearance, and can use the Skate Ranch as a place to assemble a personal park from unlocked elements. That construction feature fits the campaign's emphasis on building a shared skate space, while the game's Free Skate and multiplayer options provide ways to revisit areas and challenges outside the main story. Professional skaters associated with the series appear alongside the fictional cast, tying the adventure to the broader Tony Hawk roster.
The PlayStation 2 version belongs to the period when Neversoft was expanding the series beyond the competition-focused structure of the early Pro Skater games. Its Los Angeles setting, character-driven campaign, BMX option and linked-world presentation distinguish it from Tony Hawk's Underground 2, while its trick system retains the rhythm of chaining movement and timing landings that defines the franchise. For players exploring the PS2 Tony Hawk library, American Wasteland is a skateboarding game built around a long single-player journey, a do-it-yourself park ideal, and an expansive urban playground.
