About
Released for PlayStation 2 on October 17, 2005, The Warriors is Rockstar Toronto's street-brawling adaptation of Walter Hill's 1979 film. Rockstar Games published the original PS2 and Xbox release under the Take-Two umbrella, translating the film's stylized nighttime New York into a larger action game built around the Coney Island gang.
Rather than simply replaying the movie, the campaign begins months earlier. Cleon, Vermin, Swan, Ajax, Rembrandt, and the rest of the Warriors build their reputation, settle scores with local rivals, and claim their place among the city's gangs. The later chapters then reach the film's inciting gathering, where the Warriors are framed for Cyrus's murder and must fight their way back to Coney Island while rival gangs and police hunt them.
Combat is a close-quarters brawl system designed for crowded fights. Weak and strong strikes link into short combos, while grabs lead to throws, wall smashes, and character-specific attacks. A rage meter rewards sustained fighting with a temporary offensive surge, and improvised weapons such as bottles, bricks, bats, boards, and knives can change the rhythm of a confrontation. Health-restoring flash and other pickups add a resource-management layer when several enemies close in.
The active Warrior is usually backed by AI-controlled gang members, and the PS2 controls include Warchief orders that direct the crew to follow, defend, scatter, or otherwise respond to trouble. That makes the largest encounters less about a lone fighter than about keeping a small gang moving through an unpredictable melee. Missions also let different Warriors take the lead, giving the story's core lineup opportunities to show their roles and fighting styles.
Its objectives go beyond straightforward rumbling. Story missions include chases, stealthy escapes, break-ins, theft, muggings, graffiti contests, and turf-tagging jobs, alongside fights with groups such as the Destroyers, Hi-Hats, Orphans, Baseball Furies, and Lizzies. The Coney Island hangout acts as a base between missions, with training activities that improve stamina and optional neighborhood work that can unlock useful equipment or upgrades.
The PS2 release supports local two-player co-op in the story, including a split screen when partners separate. Its Rumble Mode provides separate multiplayer battles and unlockable characters, arenas, and variants, while progression also opens the standalone Armies of the Night arcade game, a side-scrolling homage to classic beat-'em-ups. These extras give the disc a broader couch-play package than the main linear campaign alone.
This entry refers specifically to the original PS2 version, released alongside Xbox in 2005. Rockstar Leeds later handled the 2007 PSP port, and digital PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 releases followed years afterward; those later versions are distinct releases rather than the PS2 edition described here.
