About

Shrek SuperSlam for PlayStation 2 is a 2005 arena fighting game developed by Shaba Games and published by Activision. Released in North America on October 25, it turns DreamWorks' first two Shrek films and their storybook cast into a fast, four-player brawl. Rather than following the earlier films as an adventure, the PS2 game is built around self-contained contests in which familiar characters and fairy-tale visitors compete for points. Shrek, Donkey, Fiona, Puss in Boots and Prince Charming are among the fighters, while the roster also makes room for figures such as the Black Knight, Captain Hook and Quasimodo.

A match takes place in a fully three-dimensional arena, with one to four local players trying to outscore one another. Standard attacks build a character's Slam meter. Filling that meter allows a special Slam move to be unleashed, and landing a Slam is the key way to earn points. That scoring focus gives each short battle a different rhythm from a conventional health-bar fighter: ordinary blows set up the decisive move, and a well-timed special can affect more than one rival. Each combatant has a distinct Slam, so choosing a character changes both the animation and the practical reach or effect of that powerful attack.

The PlayStation 2 arenas supply more than a backdrop for the fighting. Their breakable features can be smashed during the action, and the stages contain unusual items that can be turned on opponents. Hazards and shifting set pieces add another layer to positioning, encouraging players to watch the space around them as well as the other fighters. Shrek SuperSlam uses simple, direct controls intended to make impromptu multiplayer easy to start, but the race to charge and spend the Slam meter gives every participant a clear tactical objective. The result is a cartoon-styled melee designed around knockbacks, environmental disruption and sudden point swings.

Several modes vary the basic contest. Melee is the timed free-for-all in which players chase the highest total of Slam points. King of the Hill instead rewards holding a designated area while rivals try to force its occupant away. Slammageddon removes the wait for a charged meter by making every hit count as a Slam, producing a much more immediate scramble. Away from versus play, Story mode frames a collection of battles around Shrek's group trying to settle Donkey's young children at Dragon's Keep after their bedtime book is ruined. Mega Challenge supplies a larger series of objectives and contests for solo play, and progress unlocks additional fighters and alternate costumes.

The console release arrived alongside Xbox and GameCube versions in late 2005, with a Windows edition following soon afterward. It is important to distinguish the PS2 game from the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS releases issued under the same name: those handheld adaptations were developed separately and use different 2D fighting formats, as well as platform-specific content. The PS2 edition is the Shaba Games 3D version, pairing licensed characters with broad arenas, destruction and support for up to four players on one system. Its mix of a compact fighting-game framework, party-oriented modes and Shrek's comic fairy-tale setting places it firmly among the licensed multiplayer games of the PlayStation 2 era.

For players exploring the Shrek game catalog on PS2, SuperSlam stands apart from the franchise's action-adventure adaptations because its central goal is competitive scoring rather than cooperative level traversal. Its use of original fairy-tale combatants expands the cast beyond the movie regulars, while unlockable characters and costumes give the single-player challenges a reason to continue between group sessions. With its Slam-based scoring system, destructible battle spaces and selection of local multiplayer modes, Shrek SuperSlam remains a distinct 2005 spin-off built specifically to make the Shrek universe work as an arena brawler.
