About
SOS: The Final Escape is the PAL-region name for Irem’s PlayStation 2 disaster survival adventure, released by Agetec in February 2003. Known as Zettai Zetsumei Toshi in Japan and Disaster Report in North America, this single-player game puts a different kind of danger at the centre of its action: a major earthquake and the continuing destruction of an artificial island city. Its story follows newspaper reporter Keith Helm, who arrives at Capital City just as the disaster begins and must find a route to safety while learning what happened.
The immediate goal is to move through a city transformed by tremors, wreckage, flooding and failing structures. Keith explores damaged bridges, streets, buildings and other areas of the island, looking for safe paths where routes have been cut off. Progress depends on observing the environment, speaking with survivors, collecting useful objects and finding ways around obstacles. Periodic aftershocks make even a familiar route hazardous, asking the player to react to the changing surroundings instead of confronting a conventional roster of enemies.
Survival is supported by a practical set of systems. Health and thirst are tracked separately, so running and other strenuous actions can make Keith dehydrated; drinking water and locating first-aid supplies are important parts of staying mobile. A limited backpack inventory requires choices about what to carry, with larger packs available during the journey. Found objects can also be combined into improvised equipment, while protective items such as gloves and construction helmets can help in particular situations.
The PlayStation 2 controls support both careful exploration and quick responses. Keith can move with the D-pad or left analogue stick, use the right stick to control the camera, and switch to a first-person view for a closer look at the area. He can dash, climb, call out, check objects and use a map, compass and gathered documents to orient himself. When the ground shakes, bracing himself is a key defensive action; the game also lets him cling to surfaces or seek cover when conditions demand it.
Capital City is populated by people caught in the same emergency, and helping them forms part of the route through the disaster. Keith encounters citizens and emergency workers, and the course of the story can change through companion choices and player actions. The game presents several possible endings, giving its escape narrative room to branch without losing its focus on reaching safety. Radios, recordings and documents provide further pieces of information about the city’s collapse as the journey continues.
SOS: The Final Escape is specifically the European PAL release of Irem’s first Disaster Report game. This edition uses the SOS title, supports one player, analogue control and vibration, and includes English, French and German for menus and gameplay. Its disaster-led format established the foundation for the series later continued by Raw Danger!, making this PlayStation 2 entry the starting point for Irem’s survival stories set amid large-scale urban catastrophes.
