About
Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria for PlayStation 2 is a 2006 role-playing game developed by tri-Ace and published by Square Enix. Released in Japan in June 2006 and in North America that September, it is the second Valkyrie Profile game and tells a story set centuries before the original. Its fantasy world draws on Norse mythology, placing mortal kingdoms beneath the influence of Odin and the gods. The central figure is Alicia, the Princess of Dipan, whose body also houses the awakened soul of the valkyrie Silmeria after Odin attempts to suppress her through reincarnation.
Alicia and Silmeria's shared existence gives the journey its starting point. Pursued by forces acting for the gods, they leave behind the isolation imposed on Alicia and become caught in a conflict that threatens both Dipan and the wider human realm of Midgard. The party travels through towns, ruins, temples, and other locations while the larger struggle gradually connects its human cast, valkyries, and the world of Asgard. Although the game stands within the series' mythology, it presents its own plot and cast rather than simply retelling the first Valkyrie Profile.
Exploration in Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria combines side-view movement with puzzle solving in detailed 3D-rendered environments. Alicia can jump, strike with her sword, and fire photons. These shots can ricochet from surfaces, freeze enemies or objects into crystals, and allow Alicia to exchange positions with crystallized targets, making them useful for reaching new paths as well as navigating hazards. Dungeons also use sealstones, objects whose effects can alter conditions for the party or enemies depending on where they are placed. Choosing how to carry, restore, or position them adds another layer to traversal and preparation.
Battles use the Advanced Tactical Combination system, staging encounters in a three-dimensional arena while putting a four-member party's attacks under the player's direction. Actions consume attack points, and careful movement, timing, and successful attacks help maintain the resources needed to continue a turn. Party members can chain their individual attacks to build the Heat gauge; when it is full, they can unleash their powerful Soul Crush techniques. A leader assault offers another tactical choice, since defeating an enemy leader can end an encounter early and cause its allies to withdraw.
Enemy anatomy matters in combat as well. Different attacks can strike different body parts, and breaking a part can yield materials for equipment or item creation while also potentially limiting the enemy's options. A successful break triggers a short Break Mode in which the party has unrestricted attack points, rewarding coordinated offense. Weapons, armor, runes, and class-specific equipment support further customization. Silmeria can materialize fallen warriors known as einherjar from artifacts, and their abilities and party combinations contribute to the game's tactical options.
The PlayStation 2 release pairs that systems-heavy RPG design with a presentation built around its mythic setting, including music by Motoi Sakuraba. It followed the original Valkyrie Profile after a six-year gap in Japan and arrived alongside the PSP version of the first game, Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth. Square Enix positioned Silmeria as an evolution of the series' earlier side-view formula, retaining the importance of multi-character attack coordination while adding freer movement during combat and puzzle-focused exploration. For players interested in the series' PS2 era, it remains the chapter centered on Alicia and Silmeria's struggle against a fate decided by gods.
