About
Shadow of Memories for PlayStation 2 is Konami's 2001 mystery adventure, developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo. Released as Shadow of Destiny in North America, it follows 22-year-old Eike Kusch through the fictional German town of Lebensbaum after an apparently routine walk from a café ends in his murder. In the darkness that follows, the enigmatic Homunculus restores Eike to life and offers a second chance: use an unusual portable device to uncover who wants him dead and stop each fatal outcome before it occurs.
Rather than relying on combat, Shadow of Memories PS2 is built around observation, conversation, item use, and the consequences of changing history. Eike explores streets, shops, a square, and historic buildings, checking the map and inventory as he pursues leads. The Digipad allows him to move between periods when it is available and charged; its energy units must be found around town. This makes time travel a practical part of each investigation rather than a background story device.
Lebensbaum changes across four eras, including the contemporary setting, the late twentieth century, 1902, and the sixteenth century. A decision in one period can reshape locations, objects, and people in another, opening paths that did not previously exist or closing off a presumed solution. Time continues to pass while Eike investigates, so a promising clue can become a failed attempt if he cannot alter the chain of events before the appointed moment. Each new escape broadens the mystery instead of simply ending it.
The story brings Eike into contact with café worker Dana, the town's fortune teller, museum curator Eckart Brum, and the alchemist Dr. Wolfgang Wagner and his family. Their histories become increasingly intertwined with the red stone at the centre of the case and with Homunculus's own motives. Dialogue choices and actions at key points steer the narrative toward different conclusions, giving the relatively compact adventure several routes to revisit. Later outcome paths also reveal more about the connections between Eike, the town's past, and the force that gave him the Digipad.
On PS2, Shadow of Memories presents its time-spanning drama through 3D exploration, fixed and adjustable camera views, voiced scenes, and cinematic transitions between eras. Its European release arrived on March 30, 2001, following the Japanese launch earlier that year; the game later reached PC, Xbox in select regions, and PSP. Those later versions are separate ports, while this PS2 release is the original console version that established the game's investigation-focused structure and branching time-travel premise.
