About

Disgaea: Hour of Darkness for PlayStation 2 is a tactical role-playing game from Nippon Ichi Software, first released in Japan in 2003 and brought to North America later that year by Atlus; Koei handled the European release. It begins in the Netherworld, where demon prince Laharl wakes after an unintended two-year sleep to learn that his father, King Krichevskoy, has died. With the throne contested by rival demons, Laharl sets out from Overlord's Castle to establish his claim. The adventure mixes grid-based strategy battles with a comic fantasy story built around demons, angels, and the deliberately exaggerated behavior of its cast.

Laharl is joined early by Etna, the sharp-tongued leader of his Prinny servants, and Flonne, an angel trainee whose outlook clashes with the prince's view of what a demon should be. Their travels take them through the Netherworld and beyond as the struggle for the overlordship expands. Story episodes open new battle maps through the castle's dimensional gate, while the hub also provides shops, a hospital, and NPCs who support the party's wider progression. The game uses episode previews between chapters as part of its animated-series parody, and its campaign can lead to different endings depending on the player's actions.

Each battle is played on an isometric, square-grid map. Players deploy human and monster units from a base panel, then take turns moving, attacking, using special abilities, and positioning allies before ending the turn. Winning normally means removing the opposing force, but terrain and placement make distance, elevation, attack range, and turn order important. Units can lift and throw characters, monsters, and certain map objects. That simple action can extend a friendly unit's reach, move an enemy away from a key space, or create an opening where a straightforward approach would be too risky.

A defining feature of Disgaea: Hour of Darkness is the Geo Panel system. Some stages contain colored floor panels, while movable Geo Symbols apply effects to panels of the color beneath them. These effects can help or hinder the units standing there, so a map can become a puzzle as well as a fight. Throwing and destroying symbols can change panel colors and trigger chains that damage units caught in the sequence. Clearing a map's panels can also produce a substantial bonus. The system rewards players who study a battlefield before committing their strongest attacks, especially when enemies are protected by an inconvenient panel effect.

Long-term growth goes far beyond the story's immediate requirements. The Dark Assembly lets characters spend mana earned in battle on proposals, including requests connected to new recruits, shop inventory, and access to additional content. Senators vote on those proposals, and players can influence an unfavorable chamber with items or attempt to settle the matter in combat. The Item World offers another route to development: a party can enter an item and fight through randomly generated floors inside it, improving that item's potential while encountering increasingly difficult opponents. Together with character classes, equipment, and repeatable maps, these systems give the PlayStation 2 game room for extensive optional advancement.

Disgaea: Hour of Darkness established the foundations of the Disgaea series: highly flexible tactical combat, intentionally open-ended character development, the Item World, the Dark Assembly, Geo Panels, and the recurring Prinnies. Its original PlayStation 2 release was later adapted for other platforms, beginning with the PSP edition Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness, which added features including an Etna-focused mode. Later editions continued to revisit the first game, but the PS2 version remains the starting point for Laharl, Etna, Flonne, and the Netherworld setting that subsequent Disgaea games return to.
