About
Resident Evil 4 is Capcom's survival-horror action game, originally released for GameCube in 2005 before arriving on PlayStation 2 later that year. This PS2 edition is a port developed and published by Capcom, bringing Leon S. Kennedy's mission to Sony's console with the full main campaign and a selection of additional material.
Set six years after the Raccoon City disaster of Resident Evil 2, the story sends U.S. government agent Leon to a remote region of Spain to find Ashley Graham, the kidnapped daughter of the American president. His search leads from a hostile village to a sprawling castle and an island facility, where the Los Iluminados cult has spread the parasitic Las Plagas infection. Leon crosses paths with Luis Sera, Ada Wong and enemies including Bitores Mendez, Ramon Salazar and Osmund Saddler as he works to rescue Ashley and survive the outbreak.
Rather than the fixed viewpoints of earlier Resident Evil games, Resident Evil 4 follows Leon with a camera positioned over his shoulder. Aiming shifts the view closer behind him and uses each weapon's laser sight, making the placement of a shot important. Shooting an enemy's legs can create an opening, disarming attacks can change a fight, and a staggered foe may be vulnerable to a context-sensitive kick or other close-range follow-up.
Combat combines firearms, knives, grenades and environmental opportunities against the weapon-carrying Ganados and the increasingly dangerous creatures encountered later in the journey. The game also uses on-screen reaction prompts for escapes, hazards and some boss encounters. Although ammunition is more readily available than in the older entries, encounters still reward awareness of space, enemy behavior and the most useful target rather than simple forward movement.
Leon carries weapons, ammunition, healing supplies and treasures in a grid-based attaché case. Rearranging objects to fit its limited space is part of the routine, while case expansions increase capacity over time. The Merchant provides a central progression loop: he sells weapons and healing items, buys the treasures Leon discovers, and upgrades a chosen arsenal for greater firepower, capacity, reload speed and other improvements.
The PS2 version adds Separate Ways, a five-chapter side story starring Ada Wong that runs alongside Leon's adventure and reveals more of her role in the operation. It also includes Ada's Report, a set of reports focused on Ada and Albert Wesker, as well as extra unlockable costumes and weapons. Separate Ways and several of these extras were later carried into subsequent versions of the game.
Compared with the original GameCube release, the PlayStation 2 port makes technical compromises to suit different hardware, including reduced visual effects and pre-rendered cutscenes in place of the original version's real-time cinematics. Its added Ada scenario gives this edition its own identity, however, and the main game retains the same campaign structure, combat systems, Merchant upgrades, puzzle-solving and bonus modes such as The Mercenaries and Assignment Ada.
