About
Unreal Tournament on PlayStation 2 is an arena first-person shooter built around the Liandri Corporation’s brutal future sport. Set in 2341, it casts the player as a contender in a televised combat tournament where death is entertainment and the final obstacle is the reigning champion, Xan Kriegor. Developed by Epic Games and published for PS2 by Infogrames, this edition brought the original Unreal Tournament’s fast, match-based design to Sony’s new console. It is a port of the 1999 PC game rather than a story-driven sequel: the focus is on learning arenas, mastering weapons and surviving increasingly demanding bouts.
Its single-player Tournament mode is a ladder of matches against computer-controlled opponents. After choosing a character, voice and difficulty, the player advances through Deathmatch, team contests and challenges, gradually working toward the championship. Practice sessions provide a less formal way to select a ruleset, arena and opponents, while the bots give the PS2 version a substantial solo component. They function as enemies or teammates depending on the mode, and the game lets players adjust their skill, so the same maps can serve as an introduction to the controls or a much tougher competitive test.
The central styles of play are Deathmatch, Domination, Capture the Flag and Assault. Deathmatch is the direct race for eliminations; Domination asks teams to control designated points; Capture the Flag turns the arena into an attack-and-defense contest; and Assault gives one side sequential objectives while the other tries to stop it. The format makes movement, routes, weapon pickups, armor and timing as important as aim. Matches take place in elaborate sci-fi and industrial spaces rather than featureless boxes: the PS2 version includes locations resembling starships, old mining facilities and temples, along with console-exclusive maps.
The arsenal is designed around alternate uses rather than one all-purpose gun. The Impact Hammer is a close-range emergency tool, while the Pulse Gun’s primary fire sends energy shots and its secondary mode projects a sustained beam. Other signature weapons include the Shock Rifle, Rocket Launcher, Ripper, Flak Cannon and the Redeemer. The Redeemer is especially memorable: it can be fired as a powerful miniature nuclear missile or guided from a remote-view perspective. Learning when to collect a weapon, how its two firing modes behave and where an arena makes them dangerous is the heart of each match.
On PS2, Unreal Tournament supports up to four players in local split-screen, with a MultiTap needed beyond two controllers. Two consoles can also be linked through i.Link for two-player play across separate displays. This local setup is an important distinction from the PC and Dreamcast versions, whose network play was a major part of their appeal: the PS2 release is not an online multiplayer version. Its split-screen matches retain the same competitive modes but reduce each player’s view of the action, making familiarity with routes and pickup locations especially useful.
The controller adapts the game to the DualShock 2 with one analog stick for movement and the other for looking. It uses preset control layouts rather than full controller remapping, includes auto-aim to assist stick-based shooting, and returns the view toward center when the aim stick is released. Players wanting a more PC-like arrangement can attach a USB keyboard and mouse; the PS2 release was an early American PS2 game to use the console’s USB ports. That option, the bot ladder and split-screen play give this edition its own character, even though it lacks the downloadable mods and online community associated with the computer game.
