About

Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie for PlayStation 2 is a 2005 action-adventure game from Ubisoft Montpellier, published by Ubisoft alongside Peter Jackson's King Kong film. Creative director Michel Ancel and Jackson collaborated on an adaptation that follows the expedition to Skull Island while expanding the journey with interactive encounters and detours. The PlayStation 2 release places the player in the 1933 film setting, where filmmaker Carl Denham's crew travels to an isolated island inhabited by giant creatures and encounters the enormous ape Kong.

The story is chiefly experienced through Jack Driscoll, the writer drawn into Denham's production and the search for Ann Darrow after she is taken on Skull Island. Jack's sequences use a first-person viewpoint and focus on survival, movement through dangerous terrain, and making the best of limited equipment. Rather than leaning on a constantly visible health meter, ammunition counter, or aiming mark, the game ordinarily conveys Jack's condition through animation, audio, and the state of his weapons. That design asks players to pay attention to the environment and to seek a new tool when a fight leaves them empty-handed.

As Jack, players use firearms when ammunition is available, but the island often makes improvised weapons more important. Spears can be carried, thrown, and used with fire; the player can take branches from the surroundings, use a flame to ignite them, and turn them against hostile creatures. Companions can help in particular situations, while the route through jungles, ravines, swamps, caves, and native structures repeatedly combines combat with navigation puzzles. The goal is not simply to clear an arena: surviving an attack may depend on finding a route, protecting a companion, distracting a predator, or locating the material needed to open the way forward.

The PlayStation 2 game also regularly changes perspective to put the player in control of Kong. These third-person sections give the giant ape a very different set of abilities: Kong can strike, grab enemies, bite, climb, charge, and use objects or defeated creatures as weapons. He must defend Ann and face monsters far too large for Jack to confront directly. The contrast between Jack's vulnerable first-person travel and Kong's close-range battles is central to the game's structure, making the two playable roles more than a simple change of camera.

The adaptation follows major situations associated with the film, including the crew's arrival at Skull Island, their attempts to reach Ann, and Kong's eventual journey to New York. It also develops the island as a playable place with dinosaur attacks and other hazards between its set pieces. The game includes voice performances from members of the film cast, helping its characters and dialogue connect to the screen version while the playable action supplies material beyond a scene-for-scene retelling. Its named form is sometimes shortened to Peter Jackson's King Kong or simply King Kong, but it should not be confused with the separate handheld and Nintendo DS interpretations released under related titles.

Released for several systems in November 2005, this PlayStation 2 version is one of the main home-console editions, alongside GameCube and Xbox releases. It arrived during an era when film tie-ins often had to be built to a fixed theatrical schedule, yet Ubisoft Montpellier constructed its campaign around alternating human survival and giant-creature action. Completing the campaign also enables score-based replay goals connected to an alternate outcome for the final confrontation, giving players a reason to return to individual levels after reaching the credits.
