About
WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 for PlayStation 2 is a professional wrestling game developed by Yuke's and published by THQ in 2007. It is the fourth SmackDown vs. Raw game and the ninth main entry in WWE's long-running console wrestling series, following WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2007. Built around WWE's Raw and SmackDown brands, the PS2 release also brings ECW into the series for the first time, so its roster, venues, and presentation reflect the three-brand WWE landscape of the period.
Matches use the series' familiar combination of strikes, grapples, Irish whips, running attacks, aerial moves, pinfalls, submissions, and finishers. Players choose WWE Superstars, Legends, or created wrestlers for exhibition bouts and can compete across a selection of singles, tag-team, triple-threat, and other wrestling match formats. The game retains the ring-centered action expected from the PlayStation 2 SmackDown vs. Raw games while adding more interaction around the ring and an ECW-flavored selection of weapons for hardcore encounters.
Its defining gameplay addition is the Superstar Fighting Styles system. Every wrestler is assigned a primary and secondary style from eight categories: Powerhouse, Showman, Hardcore, Dirty, Brawler, High-Flyer, Submission, and Technical. Those styles influence a competitor's strengths and special abilities, encouraging players to consider whether a match favors power offense, aerial attacks, weapon use, technical counters, or submission work. This approach makes the selected wrestler's attributes part of the strategy rather than treating the full roster as mechanically identical.
WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 also introduces the Struggle Submission System. When a hold is applied, both wrestlers use analog-stick input in a contest over pressure and escape, placing more direct control in the hands of the player applying or resisting the submission. The change fits the game's emphasis on momentum and ring psychology: damage, position, and a wrestler's fighting style can all matter when trying to force a tap-out or survive one.
The PlayStation 2 version includes WWE 24/7 Mode, which combines ideas from the series' earlier Season and General Manager modes. Players can guide an existing Superstar or a created wrestler toward Legend status through matches, rivalries, alliances, popularity, and between-show activities. Alternatively, they can take a brand-management role, draft talent, organize shows, and try to make their chosen brand the most popular. Tournament options and championship competition add further ways to structure play outside a one-off exhibition match.
ECW's inclusion gives WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 a distinct place in the series. Alongside Raw and SmackDown talent, the game incorporates ECW personalities, arenas, and the more extreme tone associated with the revived brand. Weapons and hardcore match action complement that theme, while WWE event arenas and television-show settings place bouts in the 2006–2007 WWE calendar. The result is a roster-driven wrestling game designed to recreate weekly WWE programming as well as individual dream matches.
The PlayStation 2 edition arrived during a cross-platform release that also included newer consoles and handheld systems, but it preserves the PlayStation 2-style presentation and mode structure associated with the franchise's earlier entries. For players exploring the WWE games of the mid-2000s, WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 stands as the installment that formally expanded the Raw-versus-SmackDown formula to accommodate ECW and made fighting styles and analog submission struggles central to its in-ring identity.
