About
Mega Man X Collection for PlayStation 2 brings Capcom's first six Mega Man X action-platform games together on one disc. Released in North America on January 10, 2006, the compilation was developed and published by Capcom and also arrived for Nintendo GameCube. It collects Mega Man X, Mega Man X2, Mega Man X3, Mega Man X4, Mega Man X5, and Mega Man X6, charting the 16-bit beginnings of the X branch of the Mega Man franchise through its PlayStation-era entries.
The six main games cast players as X, an advanced Reploid and Maverick Hunter who battles hostile robots in a futuristic world. Each adventure is built around side-scrolling stages filled with enemies, hazards, secrets, and a selectable group of robot bosses. Players run, jump, dash, climb walls, and fire X's arm cannon while looking for upgrades that improve capabilities such as health, armor, movement, and weapon power. Defeating a boss commonly awards a special weapon, creating a strategic choice between tackling stages in a preferred order and exploiting an enemy's weakness.
Across the anthology, the series expands on that familiar platforming foundation in different ways. The early Super NES games establish the dash-and-wall-jump movement that distinguishes Mega Man X from the earlier Mega Man titles, while later installments introduce more elaborate story scenes, larger presentation flourishes, and additional systems. Zero, X's sword-wielding Maverick Hunter ally, is a central figure in the series and becomes directly playable in several of the included games. Individual entries retain their own stage layouts, armor parts, collectibles, boss rosters, and story developments, so the collection functions as a sequence of distinct campaigns rather than one continuous game.
Mega Man X Collection preserves the original games' separate identities while giving them a shared menu and console save support. Mega Man X through Mega Man X3 still retain their password functions, reflecting how those earlier releases originally recorded progress. The included version of Mega Man X3 is the enhanced edition associated with the PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and PC release, including its animated scenes and altered musical presentation. The later PlayStation titles remain the versions of X4, X5, and X6 that brought voiced cutscenes and a different visual style to the series.
Completing games also opens material beyond the six X campaigns. The collection includes an unlockable gallery of series-related artwork, sketches, music remixes, and hints. Its most unusual bonus is Mega Man: Battle & Chase, a kart racing game based on the original Mega Man cast rather than the X series. Players unlock it by completing Mega Man X, X2, and X3; the game had previously not received a North American release, making this disc its regional debut. That addition gives the package a change of pace from the main run-and-gun platform action.
Rather than remaking the games, this release presents a cross-section of Mega Man X as it appeared across Super NES and PlayStation generations. The transition is especially visible in the move from the pixel-art, stage-focused early titles to the later games' animated interludes and expanded narratives. For players moving through the collection in release order, the changing systems and presentation offer a compact view of how Capcom developed the subseries over time. Each title can still be approached on its own, whether the goal is clearing a Maverick's stage, locating an armor part, or testing a newly acquired weapon against another boss.
Mega Man X Collection followed Capcom's earlier Mega Man Anniversary Collection, which assembled games from the original Mega Man series. Its focus on X through X6 made it a dedicated anthology for the franchise's futuristic Maverick Hunter era, while Battle & Chase added a historically notable regional release to the package. Later Mega Man X collections would cover a broader portion of the series, but this 2006 PlayStation 2 compilation remains centered on the first six games and the design evolution they represent.
