About

Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary for PlayStation 2 is a 2007 third-person action-adventure game from Crystal Dynamics, published by Eidos Interactive. Also released under the shorter Tomb Raider: Anniversary title, it revisits Lara Croft's first expedition from the 1996 original while rebuilding it with the technology and movement style of the Tomb Raider: Legend era. The PS2 version sends the archaeologist around the world in search of the Scion, a powerful Atlantean artefact, balancing exploration, environmental puzzles, traps, and combat in a single-player adventure.

The journey begins when Lara accepts a job from businesswoman Jacqueline Natla and heads toward ancient ruins in Peru. Her hunt expands through Peru, Greece, Egypt, and the Lost Island, with rival treasure hunters and Natla's mercenaries complicating the search. The game retains familiar locations and key characters from the original Tomb Raider story, including Larson, Pierre, and Natla, but presents scenes and dialogue in real time and gives the remake a more developed connection to the continuity established by Tomb Raider: Legend.

Play on PlayStation 2 is built around navigating tombs and ruins from a third-person view. Lara runs, jumps, climbs, shimmies along ledges, crawls through tight openings, swims, dives, and swings from ropes or poles to reach new routes. The revised control scheme helps her grab suitable ledges while preserving the need to judge routes through large chambers. The grappling hook is an important tool for traversal and puzzle solving, allowing Lara to use special rings and interact with parts of the environment. Checkpoints reduce the cost of failed jumps and hazardous encounters, while medipacks found during exploration restore health.

Progress depends on reading each location as a physical puzzle. Players activate switches, locate keys, move through timed mechanisms, and avoid traps that guard the way forward. Hidden artefacts and relics reward careful searching, and completing a level opens a time trial for players who want to revisit its route under a clock. These optional challenges sit alongside the main campaign rather than replacing its steady sequence of tombs, ruins, and increasingly elaborate obstacles.

Combat remains part of Lara's expedition, although exploration and puzzle solving shape much of its rhythm. Her trademark dual pistols have unlimited ammunition, while stronger weapons such as a shotgun, dual .50-caliber handguns, and dual submachine guns use ammunition collected in levels. Lara can lock onto foes and move to evade attacks; when charging animal enemies close in, the game can slow the action for a dodge and counterattack opportunity. This mixture of platforming, puzzle rooms, and mobile gunplay gives the PlayStation 2 release its own interpretation of the original game's structure.

Anniversary arrived during the franchise's tenth-anniversary period and served as the eighth main Tomb Raider entry. Crystal Dynamics used an enhanced version of the Legend engine to reinterpret the older adventure for PlayStation 2, while other editions reached PC, PSP, Xbox 360, Wii, and later additional platforms. The PS2 release is especially notable as the version that accompanied the game's initial June 2007 launch, offering a modernized return to Lara Croft's earliest globe-spanning quest without turning it into a direct port of the 1996 game.
