About

Yoshi's Cookie for the NES is a tile-matching puzzle game developed by TOSE and published by Nintendo. It reached North America in April 1993, following its November 1992 Japanese Famicom debut as Yoshi no Cookie. Rather than a platform adventure, this Mario-and-Yoshi-themed release turns a screen of patterned sweets into a steadily intensifying sorting challenge. Its simple rules mask a puzzle built around planning where each shifted line will land.

The board contains heart, flower, diamond, check and circle cookies, plus the distinctive Yoshi Cookie. A movable cross-shaped cursor selects a position, and holding A while pressing the Control Pad cycles the chosen row or column. The layout wraps at its edges, so moving a top cookie upward brings it around to the bottom and moving one beyond the right edge returns it on the left. A complete horizontal or vertical line of a single pattern disappears, making each shift an opportunity to prepare several clears at once.

In the NES game's one-player mode, the goal is to erase every cookie on the board before new pieces crowd the field from above and the right. The Yoshi Cookie acts as a wildcard and can complete a line with any one of the ordinary patterns. Clearing ten stages advances the player to another round, while the round and speed settings determine how demanding the incoming-cookie pressure will be. The B button can accelerate the arrival of new cookies, and longer lines, chains, simultaneous clears and lines containing a Yoshi Cookie are rewarded with higher scores.

Yoshi's Cookie also includes a two-player VS. mode for direct competition on separate 5-by-5 fields. Here, players race to fill a point gauge by clearing lines while also avoiding a time-out. Winning a game earns a Yoshi mark, and the first player to collect three takes the match. Clearing a line with a Yoshi Cookie can trigger the effect displayed above the fields; possible results alter points, scramble a board, hide cookies or temporarily tie one player's movements to the other's. Adjustable time speed and starting handicaps let opponents set the pace themselves.

The NES release is specifically a one- or two-player game, a distinction worth noting beside the separately released Super NES edition, which had its own feature set. Nintendo's Japanese title presents it as an action-puzzle game, and the basic loop remains focused on rotating whole lines rather than swapping neighboring tiles. With its recognizable Mario-world presentation, wrapping-grid mechanic and competitive Yoshi Cookie effects, Yoshi's Cookie occupies a distinctive place among Nintendo's early-1990s NES puzzle games.
