About

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game for the Nintendo Entertainment System is Konami's 1990 home adaptation of its four-player arcade hit. Known simply as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on Japan's Famicom and as Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles II: The Arcade Game in parts of Europe, this NES action game brought the animated-series version of the heroes to a one- or two-player console format. Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael set out across New York and beyond after Shredder's forces put their friends in danger, turning the licensed adventure into a side-scrolling beat 'em up built around the four recognizable Turtle fighters.

The aim is direct but demanding: lead a selected Turtle through successive scenes, clear swarms of Foot Clan opponents, preserve a limited life supply, and overcome the boss waiting at the end of an area. The NES controller keeps the action accessible, with directional movement, jumping, and weapon attacks at its center. Each Turtle carries his signature weapon, so a player can choose a favorite character while pushing through crowded streets, indoor hideouts, and enemy territory. Attacking foes from the right position, reacting to incoming hazards, and finding room to maneuver are constant concerns when the screen fills with enemies.

Its scenario draws from the 1987 animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles world. April O'Neil, Splinter, Shredder, Krang, Bebop, Rocksteady, Baxter Stockman, General Traag, and the Foot Soldiers all have roles in the confrontation. The adventure begins with the Turtles responding to Shredder's attack and escalates through encounters with familiar villains before the final trip to the Technodrome. Boss battles break up the regular brawling and give individual adversaries their own moments, while the changing locations provide a tour through the cartoon-inspired conflict rather than a single repeating arena.

Although it follows the 1989 arcade game closely in style and premise, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game is not just a reduced copy. The arcade original was designed around up to four simultaneous players; on NES, local play supports one or two people. Konami also reshaped the material for the console, extending stages and adding content that does not appear in the arcade version. That makes the cartridge a distinct branch of the game rather than merely a differently packaged release of the same program.

The most notable NES additions are the snowy Central Park sequence and the Dojo stage. They bring in two bosses made for this version, Tora and Shogun, while the parking-garage portion of the adventure changes its climactic fight to use Baxter Stockman's mutated fly form. These changes, along with further Foot Soldier variations and additional music, give returning arcade players fresh material and help explain why the game has a separate sequel-like number in its North American title. The number distinguishes it from Konami's earlier NES Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game; it does not mean that this is a sequel to the arcade game it adapts.

Released during the franchise's major late-1980s and early-1990s surge, the NES game captured the appeal of playing as all four Turtles in a quick, cooperative brawler. It belongs to the early run of Konami's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games and was followed by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project on NES, while the arcade line continued with Turtles in Time. For players exploring the NES library, it remains a compact version of arcade-style Turtle action with its own scenes, characters, and two-player identity.
