About
Mother for Famicom is a 1989 role-playing game developed by Ape and Nintendo and published by Nintendo in Japan. Known internationally through its later official title, EarthBound Beginnings, it is the first entry in the Mother series and begins in a version of late-20th-century America touched by strange psychic events. The young protagonist Ninten finds his home disrupted by a poltergeist and sets out to learn why his great-grandfather George studied PSI, a form of psychic power. That investigation grows into a cross-country adventure involving lost family members, an unsettling extraterrestrial threat, and an important melody.
Mother uses a top-down world for exploration and switches to first-person, menu-driven encounters when enemies appear. Ninten can fight, defend, examine foes, use items, attempt an escape, or draw on PSI abilities that attack, heal, or support the party. Random battles, experience points, equipment, and shops give the game a familiar role-playing framework, but its tools and places make that framework deliberately unusual. Baseball bats, toy guns, frying pans, hospitals, department stores, and fast-food restaurants take the place of the swords, taverns, and castles common to many games of its era.
Ninten is joined during the journey by the inventive but anxious Lloyd, the psychic girl Ana, and the tough gang leader Teddy. Each brings different strengths to the group, with Ninten and Ana using PSI and Lloyd relying on the items and inventions available to him. The adventure moves between towns, deserts, forests, caves, laboratories, and other connected regions, with trains helping the party cover long distances. Players manage money through bank machines, recover at hospitals, buy supplies, and save their progress by calling Ninten's father on the telephone, an early series tradition that turns an ordinary household object into part of the game system.
The setting gives Mother its own blend of everyday detail, childhood perspective, science fiction, and fantasy. Ninten travels to Magicant, a dreamlike realm ruled by Queen Mary, where the quest centers on recovering the eight melodies she cannot remember. Back in the ordinary world, the party encounters hostile animals, possessed objects, zombies, robots, and alien forces. The search for the melodies gradually links Ninten's family history with the game’s wider crisis, while the changing group and locations make the story feel like a road trip as much as a fantasy quest.
Created from a concept by Japanese writer Shigesato Itoi, Mother established ideas that would return in later series games, including contemporary settings, psychic abilities, offbeat opponents, and music with a special narrative role. The original Famicom release arrived in Japan on July 27, 1989; its completed English localization was ultimately released worldwide in 2015 as EarthBound Beginnings. Mother 2 followed on Super Famicom and became EarthBound outside Japan, while Mother 3 later continued the series on Game Boy Advance. For Famicom players, the first Mother remains the starting point for this distinctive Nintendo role-playing series: a journey where ordinary America, psychic battles, and family memories meet.
