About
Haunting Ground is a PlayStation 2 survival-horror adventure developed and published by Capcom. It debuted in Japan as Demento on April 21, 2005, reached PAL territories on April 29, and arrived in North America as Haunting Ground on May 10. The game remains a PS2 release; the Japanese version was later made available as a PS2 Classic for PlayStation 3 in 2015.
The story follows 18-year-old Fiona Belli after a car accident separates her from her parents. She awakens alone in a cage beneath an isolated castle, with only fragments of the disaster in her memory. Escaping its dungeons means exploring the sprawling estate, piecing together the secrets of the Belli family, and confronting the people who want something from her.
Fiona’s indispensable companion is Hewie, a White Shepherd she befriends inside the castle. Rather than serving as a passive escort, he is central to survival: he can investigate suspicious places, search for items, attack pursuers, and return to Fiona when called. Their relationship matters, since praise, feeding, and reprimands shape how reliably he responds to commands and whether he can help during dangerous moments.
The right analog stick is used to direct Hewie, letting Fiona send him forward, call him back, praise or scold him, and tell him to stay. Coordinating with him creates both defensive opportunities and puzzle solutions, while a prepared attack can give Fiona enough time to flee. Much of the tension comes from learning when to keep the dog close and when to send him ahead into an uncertain room.
Fiona is not built to defeat every threat head-on. She can run, backstep, kick, tackle, hide, and use objects in the environment, but exertion drains her stamina. Lockers, beds, baths, shadows, and other hiding places offer ways to break a pursuit, while selected locations allow environmental counterattacks. Item searching, crafting or refining, keys, mechanisms, and other logic puzzles drive the journey through the castle’s connected spaces.
Pursuit is complicated by Fiona’s panic system. Frightening encounters can push her into a state where her view deteriorates, control becomes erratic, and she may run, stumble, or crash into obstacles. Panic subsides with time or calming items, while maintaining stamina and using hiding places wisely is vital when an enemy is close. The castle’s stalkers, including the groundskeeper Debilitas, the maid Daniella, Riccardo, and Lorenzo, turn exploration into recurring escapes rather than conventional combat.
Haunting Ground’s outcomes are not fixed to one conclusion. Player choices and performance influence the available endings, including the state of Fiona’s bond with Hewie and whether Debilitas survives. That structure gives the escape narrative consequences beyond the final chase, while the dog partnership, panic mechanics, hiding, and puzzle-solving distinguish Capcom’s tense gothic horror game from a straightforward action title.
