About

Godzilla: Unleashed for PlayStation 2 is a 3D kaiju fighting game developed by Pipeworks Software and published by Atari. Released in North America in 2007, with the European PlayStation 2 edition following in early 2008, it brings Toho's monster universe to arenas built for oversized confrontations. It follows Pipeworks' earlier Godzilla games, Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee and Godzilla: Save the Earth, and casts Godzilla alongside a broad selection of familiar monsters and mechanical rivals from several eras of the film series.

Matches turn cities and other large environments into battlegrounds for close-range brawling. Players move their monster around the arena, strike with punches, kicks, throws, and heavier attacks, block incoming blows, and use each character's projectile or beam weapon when energy allows. Buildings and objects are part of the conflict rather than mere scenery: monsters can smash through or interact with the environment while pursuing opponents. The PlayStation 2 version uses its standard controller layout for these actions, so it is distinct from the Wii edition's motion-control approach.

The story campaign begins amid worldwide disasters and strange crystals that have appeared across the planet. The game's monsters are organized into Earth Defenders, Global Defense Force machines, Aliens, and Mutants, and choosing a faction gives the campaign a different route and set of interests. Encounters are not simply isolated exhibition fights. Choices made around the crystals, destruction, and alliances can influence how forces in later battles respond, giving the single-player mode several paths through its invasion-and-monster-conflict premise.

Crystals also drive the most important additions to the combat system. Destroying them can help a monster build toward Critical Mass, a temporary powered-up state that increases its size and damage potential. Power Surges provide another tactical layer: each is a limited-use ability that can alter qualities such as attack strength, speed, defense, or recovery, and can culminate in a shockwave before it expires. These systems encourage players to watch both their rival and the changing arena instead of relying only on a fixed sequence of attacks.

Godzilla: Unleashed on PS2 retains a roster rooted in Save the Earth's lineup while making this console version its own release. The game includes original Pipeworks monster Obsidius, and Battra is the PlayStation 2-exclusive character rather than part of the Wii roster. Its mixture of versus play, destructible settings, faction-based story progression, and licensed Toho creatures makes the PS2 Godzilla: Unleashed a late entry in the Pipeworks Godzilla trilogy, designed around giant-monster action with conventional PlayStation 2 controls.
