About
Drakengard 2 for PlayStation 2 is a single-player action RPG from Cavia, the second entry in Square Enix’s dark-fantasy Drakengard series. It arrived in Japan in June 2005 as Drag-On Dragoon 2: Fūin no Aka, Haitoku no Kuro, with Ubisoft publishing the North American PS2 edition in February 2006. Set 18 years after the original game’s conflict, it returns to a troubled land held together by magical seals and places players in the role of Nowe, a young Knight of the Seal raised by the dragon Legna. What begins as service to the order becomes a journey that challenges its methods and the foundations of the peace it protects.
The game alternates between on-foot missions and dragon-riding combat. On the ground, Nowe and the other playable party members battle large groups with close-range weapons and character-specific magic, mixing direct strikes with attacks suited to distant or clustered enemies. Experience earned in battle strengthens characters and their equipment, while weapons can be developed through several levels. Rather than treating the dragon as only a cinematic companion, Drakengard 2 makes Legna central to the action: aerial stages ask players to attack formations, airships, structures, and flying opponents, and some ground missions allow a quick move between fighting on foot and fighting beside the dragon.
Legna’s aerial arsenal gives those encounters their own rhythm. Players can use a lock-on fireball for a single target or a broader attack for groups, then build toward the powerful Dragon Overdrive against crowds or tougher foes. The dragon also earns experience and changes as the story advances. Between story chapters, a world map opens self-contained destinations, and revisiting completed areas through Free Missions provides new objectives and opportunities to collect weapons and items. Difficulty options, equipment hunting, and character growth add role-playing progression to the game’s action-focused campaign.
Nowe’s story brings together new companions and familiar faces from the first Drakengard. His path crosses Manah, Eris, the former knight Urick, and the leader of the Knights of the Seal, Gismor, while Caim and Angelus return with their own place in the fate of the seals. The setting’s conflict is deliberately uneasy: the order that claims to guard the world demands sacrifices, and the group opposing it has its own motives and consequences. That tension carries the plot from battles around separate seal districts to revelations about dragons, humanity, and the threat behind the world’s crisis.
Drakengard 2 PS2 follows its predecessor’s blend of sword combat, fantasy role-playing systems, and dragon flight, but Cavia built it as a more colorful, more conventionally heroic follow-up. Its campaign is divided into chapters, and repeated play unlocks routes toward multiple endings, giving the later portions of Nowe’s quest additional outcomes to discover. It is a direct series sequel rather than a remake or port, with the Japanese and Western releases sharing the same PlayStation 2 foundation under different regional publishers. For players exploring the Drakengard timeline, it stands between the original 2003 game and the later Drakengard 3, while its story remains focused on its own cast and the aftermath of the first game.
