About

Call of Duty 3 for PlayStation 2 is a 2006 World War II first-person shooter developed by Treyarch and published by Activision. Set during the Allied breakout from Normandy in 1944, it follows connected operations surrounding the Falaise Pocket rather than presenting a single soldier’s campaign from beginning to end. Players take the roles of American, British, Canadian, and Polish servicemen as their units fight through occupied France, advance toward Chambois, and try to close the route used by German forces attempting to escape the encirclement.

The PlayStation 2 campaign is divided into missions with changing objectives and perspectives. An American infantryman serves with a squad pressing through towns and defended positions, while British SAS missions pair Sergeant James Doyle with French Resistance fighters on sabotage and rescue operations. Canadian infantry advances during Operation Totalize, and a Polish Sherman Firefly crew faces armored engagements and the defense of Hill 262. These linked stories show several Allied forces in the same late-Normandy campaign and give vehicles, urban fighting, forests, and fortified positions different roles across the action.

Combat is played from the first-person view, with the left stick moving the soldier and the right stick controlling aim. Players can stand, crouch, or go prone, use iron sights for more deliberate shooting, and carry two firearms alongside fragmentation and smoke grenades. Weapons found on the battlefield can replace the current loadout, so a rifle, submachine gun, machine gun, or captured enemy weapon may be useful depending on the immediate situation. A compass points toward the current objective, while the screen and sound communicate when incoming fire has left a character in danger; recovering away from attack restores health.

Call of Duty 3 PS2 also builds missions around squad combat and battlefield tasks rather than only clearing every enemy in sight. Teammates fight alongside the player as objectives call for moving through a sector, defending a position, rescuing soldiers, destroying artillery, marking a target, or operating a vehicle. Several encounters add close-quarters sequences in which the player must respond to an enemy at short range, and some actions use timed button prompts for tasks such as placing or disarming explosives. These moments shift the pace without changing the game’s central reliance on positioning, cover, and rifle fire.

Vehicles are a notable part of the campaign. Depending on the mission, players can take control of tanks, scout vehicles, motorcycles, or other military equipment as the battle changes from infantry assaults to armored movement. The Polish portion in particular places the player with a tank crew, while other levels use vehicles to cross terrain or support an advance. The PlayStation 2 release also includes multiplayer options alongside the single-player campaign, supporting competitive matches built around Allied and Axis teams and modes with objectives beyond a straightforward deathmatch.

Call of Duty 3 arrived on PlayStation 2 in November 2006 alongside versions for Xbox, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii. It was Treyarch’s follow-up to Call of Duty 2: Big Red One and the third numbered game in the series, but unlike the first two major installments it did not receive a PC release. For PlayStation 2 players, it is a late-era console chapter focused on the 1944 Normandy breakout, combining several Allied viewpoints with infantry firefights, vehicle sections, squad objectives, and a multiplayer mode designed for the system.
