About

Tekken 5 for PlayStation 2 is Namco's 2005 home conversion of the 2004 arcade fighting game and the fifth main chapter in the long-running Tekken series. Set soon after Tekken 4, it brings the King of Iron Fist Tournament back into the struggle surrounding the Mishima family, with Jin Kazama, Kazuya Mishima, Heihachi Mishima, and the newly revealed Jinpachi Mishima all connected to the conflict. The PS2 release arrived during the series' tenth anniversary and pairs its one-on-one bouts with a substantial selection of solo and local multiplayer content.

Matches are 3D arena fights in which each face button corresponds to a limb, so fighters build attacks from punches, kicks, throws, sidesteps, defensive timing, and character-specific command strings. Health is decided over rounds, but positioning matters as much as direct damage: a launch can lead into an airborne juggle, and a wall can extend an exchange when an opponent is driven into it. Tekken 5 moved away from the uneven floors that distinguished Tekken 4, restoring more consistent arenas while retaining stage features such as walls, breakable sections, and hazards where appropriate. This makes the game approachable as a round-based fighter while leaving room to learn detailed move lists and matchup-specific tactics.

The PlayStation 2 roster grows through play to 32 selectable fighters, mixing familiar names such as Paul Phoenix, Nina Williams, King, Yoshimitsu, Hwoarang, and the Mishima family with newcomers including Asuka Kazama, Feng Wei, and Raven. Each character has an individual story route and ending, framing the tournament from a different perspective. Jinpachi Mishima serves as the final opponent rather than a standard PS2 selection, while Devil Jin is available as an unlockable transformation-themed variation of Jin. The cast's varied fighting styles, from traditional martial arts to wrestling, capoeira, and weapon-based techniques, make changing characters a meaningful shift in movement and attack options instead of a cosmetic choice.

Beyond the main battles, the PS2 edition offers Arcade Battle, Story, Time Attack, Survival, Practice, and other ways to test a fighter. Victories earn money that can be used in the customization system to alter clothing colors, costumes, and accessories. Devil Within is a separate action-adventure mode centered on Jin Kazama; it sends him through 3D stages against groups of enemies and lets him use Devil Jin powers during the side story. The disc also includes arcade versions of the original Tekken, Tekken 2, Tekken 3, and the shooting game StarBlade, turning the console release into a compact look back at several earlier Namco arcade games.

Tekken 5 balances tournament drama with the immediate appeal of competitive play, whether a player works through character stories alone or meets another player in local versus matches. Its arcade release was later adjusted as Tekken 5.1, and the related Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection added further changes and content on arcade hardware before appearing on PSP and PlayStation 3. Those are separate releases, so the original PS2 Tekken 5 remains notable for its particular combination of the arcade game, character customization, Devil Within, and the bundled arcade-history selections. For players exploring PlayStation 2 fighting games, it captures a major mid-2000s Tekken entry built around fast exchanges, varied fighters, and the continuing Mishima tournament saga.
