About
Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution for Game Boy Advance is a 2D platform-adventure from WayForward, published on cartridge by Limited Run Games in 2025. Built from the foundations of a sequel WayForward began for the GBA more than two decades earlier, it returns half-genie guardian Shantae to Sequin Land for a story set between the original Shantae and Shantae: Risky's Revenge. Her familiar pirate rival, Risky Boots, has found a way to turn the continent itself into the tool for a new raiding scheme.
The adventure combines side-scrolling platforming, exploration, combat, and light puzzle solving. Shantae attacks enemies with her ponytail, gathers useful items and upgrades, and uses magic and belly dances as new routes open. Progress means more than reaching the end of a stage: towns, crypts, and labyrinths contain paths and obstacles that encourage players to return with the abilities needed to get farther.
Risky's Tremor Engine is the game's defining idea. In selected areas, the action takes place across linked Front Yard and Back Yard playfields. Activating the device shifts and rotates parts of the landscape, rearranging the relationship between the two layers. That changes platforms, passages, and destinations, so finding a route can involve both careful jumping and working out how to put the environment in the right configuration.
Shantae's dances also allow her to take on six creature forms. These transformations give the heroine different ways to move through the world and deal with its hazards, while her core hair-whip attack and magic items remain central to fighting. The journey leads through displaced settlements and monster-filled areas as Shantae works with friends including Sky, Bolo, and Rottytops and confronts bosses standing in the way of stopping Risky Boots.
Travel around Sequin Land connects its individual areas into a broader quest. Shantae can visit towns, meet characters, shop for improvements, and search for collectibles before heading back into dangerous terrain. The game’s pixel-art presentation and cartridge-focused design deliberately follow the visual language of the Game Boy Advance era, but the completed project is a new 2025 release rather than an unreleased prototype from the early 2000s.
Alongside the single-player campaign, Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution includes a Battle Mode for up to four players, a first for the Shantae series. The mode gives the GBA release a competitive option separate from the main story. As a recovered chapter in the series' history, the game stands out for finishing an abandoned Game Boy Advance project with members of the original Shantae team while preserving its place in Shantae's earlier timeline.
