About
Ready 2 Rumble Boxing for Sega Dreamcast is a stylized 3D boxing game developed by Midway Studios San Diego and published by Midway in September 1999. It arrived during the console's North American launch window with an intentionally exaggerated take on the sport: a ring full of fictional fighters, oversized personalities, and quick arcade action rather than a simulation of licensed professional boxing. The Dreamcast edition is the original release, later joined by separately developed versions for PlayStation, Nintendo 64, and Game Boy Color. It supports both solo play and local two-player bouts, with ring announcer Michael Buffer providing the familiar pre-fight introduction.
In the ring, players move freely around an opponent with the Dreamcast controller's analog stick and combine high and low punches with directional inputs. The face buttons handle left and right strikes, while the triggers are used to defend high or low; paired with movement, they also enable sways, weaves, and evasive maneuvers. Directional commands turn ordinary blows into hooks, uppercuts, overheads, and lunging body attacks. Every boxer has a different balance of speed, reach, strength, and special techniques, so a fast fighter and a heavy hitter do not approach a match in exactly the same way.
Bouts are built around health and stamina as well as knockdowns. Strong attacks draw from stamina, making a full meter valuable when looking for damaging punches, while the health bar determines when a boxer hits the canvas. A downed fighter can still attempt to beat the referee's ten-count by rapidly pressing the specified controls. The rules and length of Arcade Mode contests are adjustable, including difficulty, rounds, round time, and the number of knockdowns required. Those options help make the game suitable for a brief head-to-head match or a longer series of rounds.
Its signature system is the RUMBLE meter. Landing hard punches earns letters, and completing the word RUMBLE before being knocked down lets a boxer activate Rumble Mode. This opens the way to that character's Rumble Flurry, a rapid, powerful sequence that is difficult for an opponent to block if it connects. The system rewards pressure and clean offense but also gives players a reason to protect themselves after building momentum. Character-specific moves, taunts, visible fatigue, and facial damage add to the theatrical presentation, while bruises and discoloration accumulate as a fight becomes more punishing.
Arcade Mode allows one player to climb through Bronze, Silver, and Gold classes against the computer, or lets two players choose fighters for a direct local match. Ready 2 Rumble Boxing also includes a deeper Championship Mode. Players create a gym, select from an initial group of boxers, and develop them from Bronze class toward championship status. Winning bouts, advancing through classes, and training more than one boxer gradually unlock additional fighters. The mode frames progress around maintaining a gym and improving a roster rather than simply clearing a fixed sequence of opponents.
Training is handled through short skill games tied to gym equipment. Players can buy equipment such as a sway bag, speed bag, heavy bag, weights, and aerobics training, then complete timing, rhythm, memory, or button-control challenges to improve a boxer's attributes. Prize fights provide money for equipment and title-fight fees, and exhibition bouts allow saved boxers to meet another player's saved fighters. Automatic training is available for a quicker route, but manual training can yield better development. Dreamcast Visual Memory Unit support saves gym and option data for continuing a campaign.
The Dreamcast version has details that distinguish it from its contemporaries. Its playable roster includes Jimmy Blood as that platform's exclusive boxer, whereas the PlayStation and Nintendo 64 releases each received a different exclusive fighter. The game's colorful cast includes names such as Afro Thunder, Boris "The Bear" Knokimov, Butcher Brown, and Jet "Iron" Chin, underlining the playful comic-book tone. Ready 2 Rumble Boxing became the beginning of a Midway boxing series, followed by Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2. Its combination of accessible controls, character-driven presentation, competitive local play, and a campaign with training minigames made it a distinctive early Dreamcast sports game.
