About
This entry is Bero's 2002 DCQuake, a community-made Dreamcast source port of id Software's 1996 Quake, not an official retail Dreamcast release. It brings the original game's first-person action to Sega's console through both software Quake and a GLQuake option, and can also run compatible mods or total conversions.
As Ranger, the lone survivor of an invasion using experimental Slipgates, the player fights through military installations and grim fantasy realms to stop the force codenamed Quake. The campaign combines rapid movement and weapon-based combat with key-and-switch exploration, secret hunting, and trips through four episodes toward a final confrontation.
The game retains Quake's arsenal-driven rhythm: an axe for emergencies and escalating firearms such as shotguns, nailguns, grenade launchers, and the rocket launcher. Enemies range from possessed soldiers and ogres to supernatural creatures, while armor, ammunition, health, and risky explosive weapons shape each level's route and tactics.
DCQuake asks players to set up the joypad bindings in the Options menu before beginning. The Dreamcast pad can provide full in-game control except for the console: the D-pad is mapped to movement and turning, the analog control moves, the right trigger attacks, the left trigger sidesteps, and A or B jump. Keyboard and mouse input are also supported.
Saves are written to a Visual Memory Unit with zlib compression and an icon. Sound is supported, but this port does not play CD-DA music from the Dreamcast disc; the documentation only notes that CD music can be supplied from a PC through a Dreamcast cable. It also has no network support, so it does not offer the original game's online or LAN multiplayer through this release.
DCQuake supplies the Dreamcast executable rather than Quake's commercial game assets. A disc image needs the shareware PAK0.PAK data in a QUAKE_SW\\ID1 folder, or a full commercial installation's PAK0.PAK and PAK1.PAK in QUAKE\\ID1; optional game folders can hold mods. The GLQuake directory is optional and can improve loading when it has been generated on a PC or created for the port.
