About
Beyond Oasis for Sega Genesis is a single-player action-adventure from Ancient, published by Sega in North America in 1995 after its 1994 Japanese Mega Drive debut. Known abroad as The Story of Thor: A Successor of the Light, it follows Prince Ali across the land of Oasis after he uncovers the Gold Armlet, an artifact linked to an ancient struggle against the destructive Silver Armlet. Ali must find the four elemental spirits that answer the Gold Armlet and prevent its rival's power from bringing disaster to the kingdom.
The adventure is presented from an overhead viewpoint and combines free-roaming exploration, real-time combat, environmental puzzles, towns, shrines, caves, and boss encounters. Ali's dependable knife is his basic weapon, while found swords, bows, bombs, and other arms broaden his options for a limited number of uses. The game encourages careful observation of rooms and routes: keys, switches, obstacles, hidden areas, and the right ability can determine which path opens next. Healing and spirit resources also make preparation a meaningful part of each expedition away from a safe area.
The defining mechanic is the Gold Armlet's ability to summon four companions: Dytto, Efreet, Shade, and Bow. Each spirit is associated with an element and can be called from suitable features in the environment, such as water or flame. Their powers do more than add magical attacks. Dytto can support Ali with water-based abilities, Efreet can manipulate fire and attack foes, Shade has shadow-oriented tricks, and Bow brings plant-based effects. Learning where and when to summon them turns many barriers and puzzles into part of the action rather than a separate system.
Combat gives Ali a direct role even when a spirit is present. He can slash, use equipped weapons, throw items, and move around hostile groups, while the spirits provide attacks or utility that suit the situation. Bosses and dungeon-like locations ask players to manage space, recognize hazards, and use the abilities they have gained. The game also includes a map and save functionality, helping structure a quest that moves between wilderness, settlements, and more focused challenge areas. Its colorful fantasy world and animated characters give the journey a distinctive 16-bit presentation.
Regional naming is important when looking for this game. The North American Genesis release is Beyond Oasis, while the Japanese Mega Drive edition is Story of Thor: Hikari o Tsugumono and European releases use The Story of Thor: A Successor of the Light. These are versions of the same core adventure, not separate games. Ancient's work was accompanied by music from Yuzo Koshiro, and the title later led to the Sega Saturn game The Legend of Oasis, called The Story of Thor 2 in Europe and released as a story prequel.
Beyond Oasis arrived late in the Genesis and Mega Drive era, when Sega's 16-bit library already held many different takes on fantasy action. Its emphasis on summoning location-sensitive spirits distinguishes it from a straightforward weapon-driven adventure, while its quest structure supplies a clear reason to revisit places with new powers. The original game has subsequently appeared in Sega collections and officially licensed rereleases, preserving an action-adventure built around Prince Ali, the Gold Armlet, and the search for Oasis's four spirits.
