About

Galerians for the original PlayStation is a science-fiction survival-horror adventure developed by Polygon Magic. First released in Japan by ASCII in 1999, it reached North America through Crave Entertainment in April 2000. The single-player game puts players in control of Rion, a fourteen-year-old who wakes in a hospital without his memories and soon learns that he possesses dangerous psychic abilities. A voice calling for help sets him on a desperate search for the truth behind the experiments around him.

Rion explores fixed-camera locations using the deliberate, directional movement familiar to many PlayStation survival-horror games. Progress depends on investigating rooms, collecting keys and other items, reading clues, and using the right object or ability to open a new route. The play structure makes the mystery as important as confrontation: useful information can be hidden in the environment, and moving forward often means working out what has happened in a facility or city district before the next path becomes available.

Combat distinguishes Galerians from weapon-focused contemporaries. Rather than arming Rion with conventional guns, the game has him attack through psychic powers enabled by PPECs, or Psychic Power Enhancement Chemicals. These abilities include telekinesis and other aggressive mental attacks, and they must be charged before use. Limited supplies of the chemicals mean that each encounter carries a resource-management decision; avoiding danger can be as important as fighting it, especially when several hostile targets occupy the same area.

Rion’s condition is monitored through separate status gauges. Health falls when he is injured, while his AP gauge rises under damage, stress, and psychic exertion. If AP becomes full, he enters a volatile Short state: his powers erupt around him, but the episode also puts his own survival at risk as his health drains. The remaining PPEC supply is another constraint, so recovering, calming the situation, and choosing when to use a power are all part of navigating Galerians’ hostile world.

The story takes place in the twenty-sixth century and gradually expands from Rion’s hospital escape into a conflict tied to the G Project. Lilia, the girl who reaches him telepathically, becomes central to his investigation. Rion’s search leads to the artificial intelligence Dorothy and its plan to create the Galerians, altered humans intended to replace ordinary humanity. Cinematic scenes and pre-rendered settings support that escalating conspiracy while the game reveals Rion’s connection to it piece by piece.

The PlayStation release was issued on three discs, with Japanese, North American, and European editions arriving under different publishers and dates. Polygon Magic later returned to the setting with Galerians: Ash for PlayStation 2, making this game the beginning of the series. Its blend of fixed-camera exploration, puzzle-led progression, and psychic combat gives Galerians a distinct identity within late-1990s PlayStation horror games.
