About
Superman PlayStation is an unreleased action game developed by BlueSky Software for Titus Interactive. Planned for Sony's original PlayStation around 2000, it is a separate version of the Superman project better known through the 1999 Nintendo 64 release. Rather than a retail PlayStation game, this is a cancelled production: Titus lost its Superman license before it could be issued commercially. A dated June 22, 2000 build later documented the project’s existence, making the PlayStation Superman a notable piece of unfinished licensed-game history rather than an officially released PS1 title.
BlueSky’s game places the player in control of Superman across a run of compact, objective-driven missions. The available build centers on rescues involving Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen, with missions set in locations including a mine, a fuel factory, and an underwater base. This structure distinguishes the project from the Nintendo 64 game’s virtual-Metropolis framing: PlayStation stages are self-contained scenarios, asking the player to move through individual locations and complete a specific rescue or action goal before proceeding.
Superman’s move set combines close-range fighting, evasive movement, and super-powered traversal. The documented controls use the D-pad or left analog stick for movement, X for punches, and a separate button for the selected ability; Triangle cycles between available powers. Shoulder buttons, or the right analog stick, control ascent and descent, while R1 and R2 handle dodges. Circle turns Superman around, and holding it with the directional controls lets the player look around. Those inputs support an action-game approach built around directing Superman through environments, confronting obstacles, and using his abilities when the mission demands it.
The preserved June 2000 prototype opens with an FMV sequence, uses mission-summary loading screens, and includes some English character voices. It carries the serial number SLUS-00712 and supports English, French, and Spanish from the standard language options; Dutch, German, and Italian are also present but require an in-game code to unlock. These details reflect a project that had progressed well beyond an early concept, even though it never reached shops or received a conventional commercial launch.
Superman for PlayStation is therefore best understood as a cancelled BlueSky Software production published in development by Titus Interactive, not as a PlayStation port released alongside Superman 64. Its surviving build offers a view of how the Superman license was being adapted for the PS1 at the end of the console’s 1990s era: a mission-based action game focused on rescue objectives, combat, movement, and the character’s abilities. Its cancellation—and the later preservation of a dated prototype—has made it a point of interest for historians of lost and unreleased PlayStation games.
