About
Die Hard Trilogy for PlayStation is a 1996 action game from Probe Entertainment and Fox Interactive that turns the first three Die Hard films into three deliberately different playable scenarios. Rather than retelling the series through one genre, the PS1 release gives each film its own style: a third-person shootout based on Die Hard, an arcade-style on-rails shooting sequence drawn from Die Hard 2: Die Harder, and a high-speed driving mission inspired by Die Hard with a Vengeance. The result is a single-player game built around rapid shifts in viewpoint, pace, and control.
The first section places John McClane inside Nakatomi Plaza, the Los Angeles tower from the original film. It is a third-person shooter in which McClane moves through floors occupied by armed terrorists, searches rooms and corridors, and works to keep hostages alive while eliminating the opposition. The building setting gives this episode a more methodical rhythm than the others: progress depends on navigating the tower, responding to attacks from several directions, and pushing upward through its succession of floors.
Die Hard 2: Die Harder changes the perspective completely. Set around Dulles Airport, this part is an on-rails shooter: the action advances along a predetermined route while the player aims a cursor at threats and fires before they can cause damage. Terrorists and hostages can appear in the same hectic scenes, so accurate target selection matters as much as speed. On PlayStation, the sequence can be played with the standard controller or compatible pointing devices, but its essential challenge remains the same—track enemies quickly while avoiding shots that endanger civilians.
The final episode, Die Hard with a Vengeance, turns the game into a driving race against time through a stylized New York City. McClane takes the wheel as bombs threaten the city, and the player speeds between objectives, locates explosives, and tries to defuse them before the countdown expires. Vehicles including a taxi, sports car, and dump truck are used during this portion. Traffic, hostile vehicles, and the clock all make the streets an obstacle course, giving the third game a far more open, aggressive feel than the enclosed tower or airport firefights.
Its three formats are linked by the same film-based premise but are designed to stand apart, making Die Hard Trilogy unusual among PlayStation action games of its period. Each selection has its own camera position and demands: direct movement and gunplay in Nakatomi Plaza, target shooting under pressure at the airport, and vehicle control in Manhattan. That range also reflects the escalating settings of the films, moving from an office tower to an airport and then across a city. The game is based specifically on the original Die Hard trilogy, not on the later films.
The PlayStation version arrived in 1996, with versions for Windows and Sega Saturn following as part of the same release. Probe Entertainment developed the game in the United Kingdom, while Fox Interactive published it in North America; regional publishing arrangements varied elsewhere. Die Hard Trilogy later received a sequel, Die Hard Trilogy 2: Viva Las Vegas, but this first game remains the entry tied directly to the stories and locations of the first three movies. For players seeking a PS1 Die Hard game, it offers three contrasting takes on the series’ action in one disc.
